Is circumcision for non-religious reasons ghetto, trashy or low class?

OP, you are sadly misinformed and to compare ear piercing to male circumcision is ridiculous. I work for a public health NGO that has made great strides in sub-saharan Africa in educating the population about male circumcision and HIV. Many people dedicate their lives and make tremendous sacrifices in the field of HIV prevention. The scientific community and the WHO happen to believe that male circumcision DOES have health benefits and we have plenty of research to back us up. If you are going to bash people on the other thread, find a topic that you are less ignorant about.

Ahh, since you have researched this so carefully, perhaps you could explain why European countries, who do not circumcise at all, have significantly lower HIV infection rates than the US, where the majority of the adult male population IS circumcised.

What you think you know is completely false. The very limited actual research we have on HIV and circumcision is extremely sparse, poorly performed, and basically unsubstantiated. We are going to find ourselves in the middle of a crisis beyond anything we can imagine if the WHO keeps spreading this misinformation campaign to sub-saharan Africa, because magnitudes of men will believe - wrongly - that they are somehow protected from this virus.

I wonder how many of us Americans felt safe from HIV growing up because we (or our partner) was circumcised. How come our doctors aren't telling us "oh hey, no worries about HIV for you! Might as well just throw out those condoms!"

It's more complicated than "circumcision slows the spread of HIV". Condom use after circumcision is essential for HIV prevention. In some trials in Africa, condom use increased when adult males were circumcised and received extensive counseling about why and how to use condoms. So was it the circumcision or was it condoms that helped slow the spread of HIV?

There was just something published about this in The Lancet .

Circumcision is a behavior now? This thread is getting stranger by the minute.

For real. This is almost as funny as the LOBSTER QUESTION on the Expectant Moms thread.

SEND ALL YOUR SONS OVER TO MY HOUSE FOR ME TO DISPOSE OF THEIR FORESKINS!

Jewish mom bemused by the whole discussion here. As far as I'm concerned, this reverse assimilation thing has gone far enough. It's that much harder to warn my daughter off Gentile boys when they all look alike with their pants off. Leave it to us-- we'll make it literally ghetto again. Vive l'difference!

What about folks in countries like England, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, France, or Germany where most boys are not circumcized?

No, I don't believe they did. The uncircumcised men were not educated about condom use.

FWIW, and it may not be worth much, I know two adult men who had to be circumcised for health reasons -- to avoid recurrent infections, I think. I definitely considered this issue when I was making a decision re my son.

Just over 80% of all American men are circumcised. The numbers of circumcisions has been steadily falling since the 1970s, and is now somewhere just below 60%, although it varies widely based on region of the country.

That is why my DH choose to get my son circumcized, because he knew several adults that had it done later in life and it was more complicated. I let my DH make the choice, since he had the same parts. Little did I know I had a trashy, low-class husband.
