Is circumcision for non-religious reasons ghetto, trashy or low class?

No, just totally ghettO.

If you have teenagers, you know "ghetto" means incredibly cool!

Didn't anyone see that S&C episode where Charlotte freaks out when she meets an uncircumcised man? For humiliation reasons alone, I'd get my son circumcised!

Because what you really want is your son hooking up with a woman so shallow she freaks out over a little turtleneck.

We chose to have our boy circumcised but not for health reasons. The health debate seems too inconclusive to make a reasonable argument one way or another. We did it because, frankly,we think that most american women expect to see a circumcised penis, and we didnt want our son someday to have to explain to his wife or gf why he wasnt.

OP, you are sadly misinformed and to compare ear piercing to male circumcision is ridiculous. I work for a public health NGO that has made great strides in sub-saharan Africa in educating the population about male circumcision and HIV. Many people dedicate their lives and make tremendous sacrifices in the field of HIV prevention. The scientific community and the WHO happen to believe that male circumcision DOES have health benefits and we have plenty of research to back us up. If you are going to bash people on the other thread, find a topic that you are less ignorant about.

It's more complicated than "circumcision slows the spread of HIV". Condom use after circumcision is essential for HIV prevention. In some trials in Africa, condom use increased when adult males were circumcised and received extensive counseling about why and how to use condoms. So was it the circumcision or was it condoms that helped slow the spread of HIV?

There was just something published about this in The Lancet .

Have you been to Africa? Sure - there are cities where condoms would be available. What about those who live in the bush? Condoms are not readily available and many people are just hoping to have at least one meal a day. They certainly can't afford condoms.

I have been to Zambia and saw firsthand how poor so many are. The schools I visited have signs (wood signs with the words hand painted) warning students not to have sex because of the HIV risk (this was even at an elementary school). The students are fed at the school and often it is their only meal of the day (the food is an oatmeal like substance). I saw a lot of older Zambians and very young Zambians - but not as many in their 20's, 30's or 40's. AIDs has really wiped out a large population.

In these cases - circumcision might be the only defense. As you said PP - it's complicated.

Who are these women who have so much time on their hands that they not only debate this issue for their son but also for everyone else's?

I mean, I barely have time to post here about what obnoxious, sanctimonious, unlikable, intense, nosy, bourgeois people they are!

It's just so unbelievably pathetic.

O, shut up. Here you are too, posting right along with everyone else!

Yup, posting here because it's just too fish-in-a-barrel to resist!

I'll shut up if you shut up--I'd love to never see another "I didn't circumcise my son--congratulate me! Help me attempt to shame others!" thread again. This will never happen, though, because this is a crew that loves to hear itself talk!

Sure, I strapped down my 20 hour old newborn son and tore half the skin from his penis and chopped it off, because.....you know.....well, that's just what we *do* here. Plus I heard it's just better, plus women like it better. Jeez, I can't believe anyone would think there is anything wrong with this!

To me, the purpose of this thread is to question convention.

Some choices are assumed to be the gold standard, while others are viewed by those in or (to a large degree) assimilated to the majority culture as the brown standard, ie trashy, low class, ghetto. It is about people looking down on those who make choices different from theirs or the mainstream. Breastfeeding, baby names, pierced ears on babies or boys, cell phones for kids, circumcision, and so on and so on...your choices on these topics are de facto status symbols, positive or negative. Should they be? Should everything be? Should nothing be?

Deal. If your compadres never post another "Of course I circumcised. Foreskins are so icky. Plus this one time? I knew this guy? who had to get circumcised as an adult and it sucked." thread.

Are there 1 or 2 people posting over and over here on the anti-circumcision side - ie trolls?? Before DCUM, I never thought twice about circumcising my son (a white gentile here!).
