APS - how to advocate for fourth high school now

Anonymous
Do people understand that they are projecting the entire school system growing from 26,000 to 40,000 by 2030?

Please wrap your brains around that.

1300 extra bodies at WL is nothing. We aren't even close to being prepared for what is coming our way.

I thought we don't believe their projections anymore?

Well, they have been consistently under...

If you have 4000 kids at WL, approximately 1000 are going to be 9th graders. Please don't assume the current HS zones are going to stay as is. Neighborhood boundaries will be adjusted to divert more kids to a huge WL.

Honestly, I think these people trying to suggest that capacity isn't going to increase by this much are not APS parents. The writing is on the wall.

I think the projections are wrong.
I don't think there is enough housing stock to bring about that type of population growth.
I doubt that the condo buildings and apartments will fill up with kids.

Pay attention to the county board!

Actually, the motto in APS is from "Field of Screams": "if they come, we won't build it."

I can't tell if the above was written by Libby Garvey or Nancy Van Doren.

It wasn't NVD, there is no comment about how people are not smart or how twins should get preferential treatment in lotteries.

Oh, snap! I've just learned that I can sue APS if my kids don't get into HB. Forget this lottery nonsense.

Yeah, I can't believe that lady. Oh wait, I can. F***ing Arlington.

HB is not TJ. It's a lottery school, and it's not supposed to be for "exceptional" or "highly gifted" students or exclusive to any certain type of student, except that the lack of structure means a child who is self-directed might do better than one who is not. Supposedly, everyone gets an equal shot in the lottery. I think she should move to FFX or MoCo if she wants public schools with selective admissions.

To the OP, the Yorktown PTA will host a High School Capacity Town Hall in the YHS cafeteria from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25. While this meeting is not sponsored by APS, School Board members Barbara Kanninen and Reid Goldstein will attend. This would be a good opportunity to show support for a 4th comprehensive high school and lobby the School Board members.

Can we circle back around to this for a second?
Say what now?
Is this something that is happening?

OP here - thanks for this note! I got an email about this meeting this morning and do plan to attend.

Anything in particular I should do, other than show up and be a warm body?
