S/o if you could choose any MCPS high school, which would you choose?

Easy question - any of the w schools, bcc, or magnets.

BCC is the perfect school, so much so that they have kids that get drunk & do drugs at prom & when the principal suspends those students & bans them from walking in graduation, those "non" helicopter parents throw a total fit & use all of their "non" money and "non" influence to call the superintendent & get the punishment overruled.

20:21 IS the problem & why kids like those little angels end up like that.

After a lot of research, we chose BCC. It is just as strong as any of the W schools, looking closely at the scores and sub-scores will show you this (we had a student entering 9th grade that would be unable to ever test for a magnet program so a strong peer group was important). It also has some economic and racial diversity that is a massive benefit to kids, we liked the freedom it offered kids (both during the school day and kids being able to walk/bus/metro to each other's homes) , and out of what are considered the stronger schools it is by far the least affected by helicopter parenting (likely due to many dual income families and large international population).

We have a current 7th grader who will likely get into both magnets next year (extraordinarily strong standardized test taker, has been student of the month multiple times, straight As, got into a very prestigious summer academic program, etc) and it will be her choice, but we will be very happy if she chooses BCC for HS.

This has GOT to be a troll post.

Which W HS was the one where the Principal sent out a letter/email to parents telling them to stop hosting drinking parties? So.... not that one.

Wow, someone posts a typical Whitman post about BCC and people go crazy.

I'm guessing the PP is talking about Westland. Student of the month is what it sounds like, except that there are usually 1-3 a month. Students are nominated by teachers for academic reasons and characteristics like consistently showing kindness to others.

To the PP of this quote, is this something that Westland implemented on their own, or do you know if it's something that other middle schools do as well?

Im just asking because I've never heard of other MCPS middle schools doing it before & I was wondering if MCPS schools are allowed or encouraged to do these kinds of motivational programs on their own, or if they have to receive prior approval from the MCPS BOE?

Funny part is I am pretty sure it speaks more to your insecurities as I don't think I've seen one Whitman poster this entire thread. It is everybody else trying to be a boaster for their school hopping to raise other people opinions of it. There hasn't been one Whitman parent who has felt the need to, that in of it's self is telling.

Montgomery blair gives out a student of the month award too. It is awarded by the grade team leaders e.g. The 10th grade team leaders select student or students of the month. I think it is awarded based on academic performance. No idea how many students they give this award to. If it is just one then it is a big deal given there are around 800 students per grade

We like our Sherwood cluster.

Much of what you wrote makes sense, but how could you possibly conclude that BCC is less impacted by helicopter parenting? There is no way you would be in a position to assess that no matter how much research you did.

Oh please, take a look at the board overall. That is what is telling.

It was Whitman. We are fortunate to have a truly outstanding principal who cares deeply about the kids and is outraged by the fact that parents would host a drinking party in the wake of the Wootton tragedy and other similar recent ones. I hope no one thinks their community is safe from this sort of idiot parent, and I'd love to see other principals and community leaders take a similar stand.

My second grader has won 3 "student of the week" awards at her ES, and always finishes her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She is definitely going to get into a MS and HS magnet.

I agree Blair is untouchable. Overall best college admission stats and the highest number of National Merits in the county.
