| Zoned for WJ, but ds attends Blair (magnet). I like both schools very much. WJ has a nicer building (more natural light and newer) and great sports teams and clubs - their theater productions are great. Academics are fine. We did not push ds in any direction but after shadowing in both schools he was absolutely positive he preferred Blair and he is sure he made the right decision. There is a lot of energy at Blair - lots of different kinds of kids with different interests and backgrounds. He loves the magnet program which has given him a community of kids (and teachers) who love learning math and science. They seem to laugh a lot in class - he noticed that when he shadowed too that there was a lot of joy in the classrooms. It is a tough program and there have been stressful weeks but it is not a grind. His non magnet classes are decent (the same as they would have been at WJ). We like the staff and admin at Blair too. They work really hard at making their school feel small and intimate for the kids. I don't think you can go wrong at either school. |
| Change RM for WJ and I could have written the same post. |
Someone's been smoking some serious dope |
LOL I am the original poster. I did not respond to my post, someone else did. This is how much you know, stupid. |
typical blair magnet parent... no class at all. |
Any child whose home school is RM can go into the IB DP in 11th grade. |

We are very fortunate to have had the ability to choose any HS that we wanted last year when we moved to the area.
After a lot of research, we chose BCC. It is just as strong as any of the W schools, looking closely at the scores and sub-scores will show you this (we had a student entering 9th grade that would be unable to ever test for a magnet program so a strong peer group was important). It also has some economic and racial diversity that is a massive benefit to kids, we liked the freedom it offered kids (both during the school day and kids being able to walk/bus/metro to each other's homes) , and out of what are considered the stronger schools it is by far the least affected by helicopter parenting (likely due to many dual income families and large international population). We have a current 7th grader who will likely get into both magnets next year (extraordinarily strong standardized test taker, has been student of the month multiple times, straight As, got into a very prestigious summer academic program, etc) and it will be her choice, but we will be very happy if she chooses BCC for HS. |
| Wow student of the month! |
LOL I know right?!?!? |
| Not the PP but curious about student of the month award. Do many kids get this? Kid is at blair HS. |
I'm the 'ditto' poster. I wasn't the original. I think the poster who has a child at Blair but whose home school is WJ summarized Blair nicely. I would say 'ditto' to them as well! It's not IB. It's the math magnet program. You may be confusing Richard Montgomery (with the IB program) with Montgomery Blair (with the Math Magnet program). |
I've never heard of it. I have three kids in mcps. There are also lots of middle school students at regular middle schools who have strong grades. I think Blair received 800+ applications for 100 acceptances and they all thought they would get in. As they say, the numbers are not in anyone's favor. |
| 21:02 wins prize for one of the most obnoxious posts on this board. "Extraordinarly strong test taker...prestigious summer program." Very glad we are not in the BCC community with you. Ugh. Your post makes me want to vomit. |
No one can make this statement. |
| My daughter goes to Blake it's been great for her so I would choose it again. |
