Marshall High School?

Marshall is a great school. Madison is also a great school. One doesn't have to be bad for the other to be good.

First of all, I have something dangling between my legs...

Second, the poster was asking about madison. I happen to be familiar with my neighborhood. I looked up the info. I am not saying madison is better (it is for my DD, though). Rather, I am saying if you want madison, here is what it is.

Whoever you are, you are hell bent on bashing schools that aren't Madison. It's childish.

There tends to a trend in these fora for people to bash schools that their kids don't attend. I don't understand the reason for this. As an example, in the AAP discussion boards there is a lot of bashing of Jackson MS as some sort of gang infested hell hole that white parents should keep their little snowflakes away from. I honestly don't get it, esp.as my DD went to Jackson and had an absolutely wonderful MS experience. So, if someone can explain the psychology behind the school bashing, I would love to hear it.

Your daughter has attended both schools?

So, I have questions about Marshall High School. One person I talked to described it as 'very diverse' and to him that wasn't a good thing. someone else said its 'a lot of military families'. We think diversity is great for our kids, but where we live now, we are the minority, and to be honest, we really don't like it. So, some diversity is great, but not so much we feel like the minority. We are white and Jewish. Will our kids be the only Jewish kids in their classes? Will we like communities feeding into Marshall High? Will we fit in? Thanks for any opinions.

Be patient and you'll find something decent in Vienna zoned for Madison. The spring market is just starting up now.

No knock on Marshall but it is an IB school, so make absolutely sure that is what you want before you consider it as an alternative. We moved out of an IB district, after we realized it did not also offer AP classes and that less than 25% of the students were getting IB diplomas.

Combination of competitiveness + cognitive dissonance.

Meh, the AAP parents who sent their kids to Jackson bad-mouth Thoreau, too. No one who uses the term "snowflakes" deserves to be taken seriously.

Really? Maybe put it at the top of the list for the resources it needs for a badly needed renovation. I know the teachers, some students and principal at FCHS. It is not "garbage." It has a higher percentage of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch, and it does an incredible job in educating them. PP needs to get his/her snooty white nose out of his/her ass.

25% getting the IB diploma is outstanding. It is very rigorous. To compare with an AP school, what percent are doing 8 APs?

Don't know, but the college readiness statistics for the top AP schools in FCPS like Madison are much higher than those for any of the IB schools, so they must be taking and passing more AP exams. You can tout how rigorous IB is, but something is wrong if over 75% of the kids at an IB school graduate without an IB diploma. At some IB schools, it's more like 95%.

I would not assume that poster is white.

Clearly you don't understand the concept of cognitive dissonance.

I understand it perfectly, along with the hypocrisy often shown by those who like to deploy terms like it.
