If you were married, how much was your HHI at 25?

Lucky. I supported my DH through law school and he works at a measly firm in Arlington making 120k in good years.

120k? What a loser! That's barely enough to support half the households in DC (where the median HHI is 93k).

You may be sarcastic, but I expected more from a lawyer when I was dating.

25 I was making ~$45K and boyfriend (now husband) was making probably ~$75K. 8 years later I'm at $135K and he's at $185K before bonuses - totaled >$350K HHI in 2016.

He's in finance (govt contracting) and I'm in HR (public sector).

Wow your poor husband. To think you're still sitting around pining for the days you were attractive enough to sell at a higher price. What exactly do you bring to the household?

1993 $75k total from two salaries
2017 $277k from single income; wife stays home with kids. In one year we'll be around $350k

$70K back in 2001. We were both journalism majors working for a midsized newspaper back where we went to school (Michigan). Luckily we both had the good sense to get the hell out of that field. Used our strong communication/writing skills to launch careers in integrated marketing communications (me) and corporate communications (DH). HHI now $220K (both 40). Not sure it will go up much as we really like our work life balance and don't really want to make major changes. We have everything we need and some wants.

We'd probably be making a combined ~$100K at most if we stayed in journalism, even if we moved somewhere with higher pay. And work/life balance would be worse.

About $150k when we were 25, as a military officer and a fed. Now about $225k at 35, as an engineer and part time consultant.

But the good thing is that investment income is typically over $100k now, so I guess you could say the total, in an average year, is about $325k. Investment income is so much better than earned.

I was 25 when we got married. my income was about 45k and his was 150, so about 200k when you account for investment income. 6 years later ours is about 300k

This is very aligned with what we make at 24. I'm 55K and he is 160k with bonus (quarterly). I don't know if he will move up much higher unless he gets the job with Facebook he's interviewing for.

What does DH do? Software engineers at FB make between 120-140k.

Hubby is very specialized and very talented. He makes 160K with bonus at a small cyber security firm.

I was 24 in third year of law school, so only had loans for school expenses, and DH was 25 working as an internal auditor at Comcast making $40K. We also lived in the south, so it wasn't as dire as you may be thinking. Nice apt complex was only $600 a month all in.

That was 2012 btw. 2017, and our household income is $190k, and we are fed and non-profit 29/30. We have one toddler, and a townhouse. I'm happy with how our lives are progressing.
