If you were married, how much was your HHI at 25?

Always puzzled by this. 1.2M is essentially unlimited income (assuming you don't overstretched on fixed expenses) -- I would be off doing way more interesting things than DCUM!

That's because like most folks, you make the incorrect assumption that money affects quality of life than it actually does. See above:

It's not in the sense that you're still working, sleeping, eating, and spending time with people and hobbies.

This is why people in poor countries are generally as happy (or happier) as folks in rich ones.

At the end of the day, whether you make 10k a year and are working in the country or 10M (or more) and living in the big city, when you pull back far enough, your days are pretty much the same: a mixture of things you have to do and things you get to do, of time with others and time apart, of time eating, sleeping, and in the bathroom. If you like surfing the Internet and participating in forums, that's not going to magically change just because you make a lot of money (or a lot less). Pretty much everything imaginable gets boring if you do it enough (sex, travel, food, drugs, anything).

^ To that end, we're fantastically rich here. Paid off house, cash cars, SAHP, two kids, more than a dozen weeks of vacation, no student loans, etc.

However, the biggest changes in the last few years have been having the kids (so much fulfillment...so little free time...) and getting my current job (instead of being in grad school and working during the day).

The only way more money could change our lives significantly would be if we banked enough to be FI. And to be honest, there's a good chance I'd still keep working; we'd probably just take some crazy vacations.

Money doesn't change your life much at all once you have enough to meet your needs; time is much more valuable after that. And even that isn't that life-changing once you have some of it, because study after study shows social interactions and a sense of purpose are the strongest predictors of happiness and longevity, and all the time in the world is useless if you don't have people you care about to spend it with and something meaningful to do with it.

Yeah I agree. That is why I do a lot of volunteer work. We don't want kids, but that doesn't mean I can't teach them math & science.

You seem to be assuming I don't work for that money. I do interesting things like kill time in airports, or commuting, or waiting for kids with DCUM.

I started my own business and spouse had just started fresh from school at a large law firm. We have continued to be financially very well off (I'd call us rich today), but it was an incredible amount of money at a young age. Kinda crazy to be 25 and able to afford almost anything you want.

How does one go from making 70k at 25 to 700k per year?

Probably medical resident to private practice specialist.

Around $20,000. I was 25, dh was 27. Had lots of student loans and a baby too.

Now around $400,000. I'm 38, Dh is 40. 2 kids, no debt other than our mortgage but also don't live like we make this much because we have a lot to catch up on with retirement and college savings.

18K and -50K. I was in grad school and DH was in law school so we lived off of my TA salary and DH's law school loans. 17 years later, DH makes 1.2M as a law firm partner and I make ~100K as a business owner and we make ~100K from rental property we own. It's been a crazy ride.

When I was 25, DH was 31. I made 57 (and wow I thought it was so much money!!), he made 120-125 with bonus, so about $180 HHI. Now I am 32 and he is almost 38. I made $167 last year and he made $155-$160 I think, so about $325. And I feel so poor! Kids will do that to you I guess.

Lucky. I supported my DH through law school and he works at a measly firm in Arlington making 120k in good years.
