| Honestly, this explanation actually looks worse for Melania than I realized. I was posting yesterday that she shouldn't be blamed for this mess (because I assumed that someone else wrote the speech), and that I could not understand why the just didn't fire the speechwriter right away. Now it is clear from the NY Times article and this statement that Melania disregarded the professionally written speech and collaborated with a family friend (they call her a professional writer, but that statement suggests otherwise) and specifically told this person to include the Michelle Obama stuff. No wonder the she wasn't fired, Melania was behind the whole thing, and the Trump camp is admitting as much! |
The writer said she "included some of the phrasing in the draft". You can call it whatever you want. The sad part is you guys are hysteric about it for a few phrases. HRC would sack her immediately for political gain. I admire how Trump family treated her. |

It's official. Parts of the speech was plagiarized. Instead of coming upfront when it was called out and said 'hey, we f**ked up. We're moving on. But no. Everybody else was at fault....the press, Clinton, the kid down the street, everybody EXCEPT the Trump camp.
So now they have their fall guy (gal in this case), yet I hear Republicans insist it's not important. They know good and damn well if this had been Clinton they would NOT have been able to contain themselves. |
| So Manfort was lying about the plagiarism?!? |
And this is what I am afraid of about a Trump presidency... he says he's going to surround himself with knowledgeable people, and listen to them, but this incident shows that they don't really listen to the professionals that they hire. They will just do it themselves. Scary as hell! |
It's called plagiarizing. And the hysteria you are so glib about would have been all over the RNC if it had Clinton. You can call it what you want but please don't be hypocritical. |
Actually, I think they made her the fall gal, so really, they are treating her like shit. And as PPs have stated, they won't fire her because she wasn't at fault. |

It gets better. Did you notice how the stationary was from the Trump Organization, not the campaign, and how she described herself as a Trump Organization employee?
That's probably a campaign violation: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/07/20/did-the-trump-campaign-violate-federal-law-by-using-a-trump-organization-speechwriter/?postshare=3221469037300677&tid=ss_tw |
It's a contraction and commonly used in many parts of the country. |
Hasn't this already been pretty much the hallmark of the Trump campaign? Nothing he says or does seems like it could have been at the advice of a seasoned professional. It's precisely his shoot from the hip, unscripted, unvetted attitude that his followers seem to love. I think they'd be very disappointed if he changed anything about his approach once in office. It's those on the other side who are probably hoping that if we do get stuck with him for president, he'll at least let the professionals guide him. |
The writer said she included some of the phrasing, and those phrases are fairly common. If you insist that's plagiarism then Barack plagiarized Deval Patrick and Michelle plagiarized Saul Alinsky. |
That is a good question. It just showcases the ineptness of the operation. Anyone can see that if the speech writer heard those words from Melania, as she says, then Melania should have recognized when she re-read the speech (if she's such a big fan of MO) that those were from MO's speech which she evidently watched over and over and copied down. This is the kind of "taking responsibility" that sheds light on the actual issue, which is that Melania should have caught the plagiarism from the beginning -- could have, that is, if she had wanted to. |
Why do you keep repeating this lie? I guess if the truth doesn't fit, lie. But, it is making you look pretty stupid. |
For what I hope is the final time, the Obama speech and the Patrick speech used the same speech-writer, who essentially plagiarized himself. It's not best practice, but it's also not a big issue. In fact, Trump Jr. has the same issue with his speech last night. http://www.vox.com/2016/7/19/12233962/donald-trump-jr-plagiarize So here's the difference, and it's big: Melania Trump's convention speech copied whole paragraphs from Michelle Obama's convention speech. That's not okay. Don Trump Jr.'s speech was written by a speechwriter who used some of his past material in the speech. You can argue whether that's the height of speechwriting, but there's nothing unethical about it |
But there is the underlying issue that Melania did not graduate from college (Although The Donald has promoted that she has). Maybe she does not know what plagiarism is? [I doubt this - but he let's give her the benefit of the doubt] |
