OP here. I have no sense that my kids "deserve" financial aid. In fact, I posted my question on here largely with the suspicion that we wouldn't even qualify for most financial aid. If I thought we did and would just use that to pay for the school, I wouldn't have asked the question. My question was primarily for people who potentially fall in middle -- may not qualify for financial aid but don't have a ton of disposable income. To be honest, the thread has been helpful in part because it gives me a sense that perhaps we actually *could* qualify for some aid, although I don't know.
This sense of "rich people things" is truly offensive. I think it's just coming from one PP, but even so, it's obscene. There are no "rich people things" that others have no right to access. There are things that are expensive and things that are less expensive or free, but anyone of any class and background has the right to access any of those things if they are able to find a way to afford them. Sure, it takes money, but if we can find a way to sacrifice other things (as many of the PPs noted doing) in order to come up with the funds to afford something like this, then there's no reason why people who have more money than us should feel it's exclusively their purview. |
There is a secret -- though not a well kept one -- its called financial aid and targeting the right school that is eager to invest in your kid. |
Oh please. It's called knowing how to make a dollar out of fifteen cents -- a concept you probably couldn't begin to grasp. |

Whenever I read comments about what someone can afford and can't afford based on their salary in the context of paying for your children to go to private school I'm shocked at how many people have no concept of struggling to provide your kids with the best life possible. My dad worked for the sanitation department during the day and night, was our building maintenance man to get a discount on our apartment, collected aluminum cans to trade them in for money, refurbished furniture and did whatever ofd jobs he could find to pay his portion to send me and my sister to private school (we also got financial aid). This idea that you only send your kids to private school if there is no financial stress when doing so is mind blowing! What a bunch of weak sauce people! OP you want to send your DC to private while you stay home and your husband works for the government, then you apply for FA and find a hussle you can do from home and you work it! Will it be easy? I imagine not, but if it's that important to you then the sacrifice will be worth it!
My dad has ZERO regrets! I'm an Engineer (and now a top executive) with a top government contractor in DC and my sister is a Dentist. My dad worked his ass off to make sure we had the best education possible and as an 80 year old man he says he wouldn't have had it any other way. Oh, my mom was a SAHM as well. |
I don't think it's completely fine. I don't think FA should be for people who could be earning more if they made some changes to their lifestyle, but chose not to. Honestly, the OP could try for FA and maybe she'll even get some - but if she really wanted private, isn't the most assured way of affording it for her DH to look for a higher paying private sector job and for her to go back to work? Also - I'm not sure privates are falling all over each other to provide lots of FA at the elementary level to someone like OP anyway. There are a lot of really bright kids whose parents can pay for school she is competing with. Besides, the vast majority of people I know--including people at very high income levels--send their kids to public schools, so not sure why some posters are so upset that i'm suggesting that would most likely be a good choice for OP. |
I agree with this poster. OP, apply for aid and you will be pleasantly surprised. Our HHI is 250 as well with both spouses working and we receive $15k in aid for 2 kids. Annual tuition is 56k for 2 kids. We could make it work without the aid, but the aid allows us some breathing room. I truly believe everyone with hhi of 350k or less should apply for aid. The schools recognize that these tuitions are ridiculous even for those who make a ton of money. |
Such entitlement. You do know you are taking it away from the truly needy, right? |
The vast majority of people could make more money if they had made different choices. For example, every sahm out there could earn an income. All of those parents who had kids very young or single moms who had babies out of wedlock. All of these decisions result in families earning a lower income than others. My husband and I waited to have kids and now earn 400k plus. Had we had kids going we would have been making much much less and wouldn't have time to save up a downpayment for a home. |
I don't mean big changes like what age you had a child or whether you decided to go to med school or not. I mean smaller changes. Like a govt lawyer looking for a higher paying job at a firm, or the sahm going back to work. |
What truly needy? Lol. I seriously doubt your statement is correct. Show me the truly needy family that applied and didn't get any? Chances are the truly needy they admitted is getting 97% FA and this poster is probably getting a much smaller percentage, but a percentage that helps. I think you are bit delusional about who is exactly applying to private school. LOL |
Such perfect choices! If only everyone had made perfect choices. Whatever. I waited to have kids too and ended up paying over $60K for IVF because nothing was absolutely wrong with me or my DH, we were just of advanced age. Life is no crystal stair and there is no plotting the perfect course. Yes, we get FA and yes in part because we have that hefty medical debt hanging over us. |
Obviously you live in a bubble. As a 20 year government attorney it is darn near impossible for me to all of sudden switch to a private firm. Also, it's not that easy for SAHM to transaction back into the workforce either. Have you been paying any attention to the hiring market over the past 10 years? So sick of people who think everyone's life should be as simple as the one they have. |
I don't think government vs. big firm and sahm vs work are a whole lot smaller decisions than the age you have kids or whether to go to graduate school. There are major challenges and life-style impacts to all of the above. In any event, the private schools are okay with government workers and sahms -- they have just have their FA practices for dealing with that. Of course, they really love full-pay people and celebrity government officeholders. |
Good to know PP. I will alert the ministry of magic and alert them that you performing magic outside of Hogwarts. I'm sure professor mcgonegal would support your thriftiness (she IS Scottish!) but your blatant misuse of your magic needs to be addressed. |
So in addition to being a dumb ass you also don't know anything about music. LOL. It's a music lyric you moron! LOL A lyric that speaks to being about the hustle and doing what you have to do to make make ends meet! LMAO!!! |
