Move out and start adulthood.

Op, you don't get to control your adult child just because you, paid for college

Np here I'm 33 my parents did pay for my college years ago but even if they hadn't I would still listen to them because Thats how I was raised. I'm not aloud outside after dark. Which can be difficult in the winter when it gets dark at 5pm. I do work from home so it works for me. I have to ask before I eat food or buy anything. I'm so used to it now it's second nature. My parents are across the country so timing is key.

Wut?

Living in their home - help out, save money to retirement and general savings (they helped me set up a roth and investment accounts) and let them know where I was and when I'd be home or call. No curfew, just common courtesy.

No rules. Didn't have a curfew in college (summers) either.

I lived at home for a couple years after returning from a Fulbright fellowship abroad. I let them know when I would be home as a common curtesy. No problems.

Now I am helping my elderly parents in lots of ways. That is how we roll.

College was paid for by a combo of them, me, and financial aid.

Only if they can find a job right away.

GET A JOB.

No ifs, ands, or buts.

My parents paid for our Catholic university education (Notre Dame for three of us; Villanova for three of us). If we were to go to a private that was not Catholic, we might as well go to a public school.

Graduate in 4 years.

Work the entire time. Try to be an RA if possible to offset tuition.

Be responsible for all personal spending $$.

No credit cards.

No car.

No fraternity or sorority (there were none at ND anyway) until my three younger sisters got to Villanova, where there was a Greek system. They had to pay for that stuff themselves, though.

Study abroad -- also self-funded.

Say what?

In other words, my parents would pay for private if it had the Catholic-ness attached to it, but if we were going to go to a secular school, it should be a VA public.

I'm the one who asked above. So you are saying you live across the country from them but aren't allowed outside after dark when you are on your own? Same with eating/buying food. Or is this just when you are visiting them, which is still weird but far less controlling?

My parents were religious - so -

- no shacking up in their house
- no living with BF if we wanted wedding paid for (3 of 4 kids broke this rule)
- pay for car insurance
- don't go into liquor cabinet without asking
- pay rent (minimal - probably paid for my groceries)
- be prepared to pay your own way when we go out to dinner- sometimes they picked up the tab but never assume
- no smoking in the house
- no parties when they were out of town
- clean up after yourself

I'm just very biblical . I believe in honoring my mother and father so I do as they say. Well as my mother says, my dad doesn't care what I do. Yes I listen everyday not just when I'm visiting.

If you have to ask before you eat food or buy anything, that must mean you call your mom several times a day. Is that right?
