Your furniture does not need to perfectly match. Start scoping out IKEA and/ or yard sales and find a few pieces that will work.

I would ask SIL not fight for it but see her reaction and that will tell you a lot |
Update OP? What did SIL say?
I'm an earlier PP but I agree with PP who said to sell the remaining furniture so you have some $$$$ to buy new. UPDATE US! |
OK- my passive aggressive mode would invite MIL and SIL over for tea and have folding chairs OR lawn chairs in the living room for them to sit in. |
I don't get the matching thing. Only my DH's grandparents have "matching sets" of furniture. How about having a decorator come in and suggest a few pieces that will work with what you have (and probably be much better than matchy-matchy)? |
This is too funny ![]() If someone actually needs furniture their MIL gave them to actually sit in, they probably can't afford a decorator, unless you are volunteering. I would just let it go, learn from it and know that your MIL's "gifts" may not be permanent, and start looking on Craigslist / yard sales for some bedbug free "non-matching" chairs. |
When your MIL asks for ideas for a Father's Day gift for her son you can make the suggestion of a new chair for the living room. |
