That was my question. So I googled, and discovered that there are about 100 different opinions on this. Interestingly, my alma mater makes almost every list, which I did not know. But then, I rarely name drop my college, and have never, ever said that I attended a "Southern Ivey". Turns out, you can get through a good chunk of life by saying, "we met in college" instead of "we met at our southern Ivey". So that one line tells me everything I need to know about Bullis mom.

I encouraged her to go to a no-name school. She wanted a name due to her pursuit of a career in medicine. This is what DCUM parents call these schools in the college forum. I thought y'all would realize that?

You should have told her that when applying to med school, the undergrad school doesn't matter. She needs great grades, test scores, recommendations and preferably good work experience. Unless you have money to burn, arriving at the med school steps with no debt is big too. Now I'll wait for you to tell me why I'm wrong. Unicorns and rainbows and whatnot.

I did. She's a victim of the elitism of the DC area. Trust me, we tried! The benefit of the school she's in, is if she keeps her grades above a certain GPA, it's quite easy to transition to the medical school. There are advantages in that regard for sure!

Maybe the elitism exists more at Bullis. Or at least not for everyone in DC. My son graduated from Langley, went to VCU and is now in its med school via the "guaranteed admissions" program. Win win.

Definitely! Congrats to him!! I think girls are more sensitive to this kind of peer pressure.

Maybe. My own DD went to a "no name" local (Catholic) high school. She's all in at a name brand college though.

My eldest? No name. Could care less. A boy. My youngest son? Similar. I should show my daughter your post about your son and say "see? SEE?"

He chose very wisely. Good your DD is in a Catholic high school too. Values are a good thing and a bit lacking these days. I have a friend who's DD is at Pepperdine and loves it. I could think of worse places to go to school than Malibu!

It's funner if you just join in the fray. Jeff must be happy he hasn't been asked to officiate.

If you don't understand, maybe this isn't your game?

NP: It's Ivy, not Ivey or Iveys.

You are truly ridiculous.

How on earth did this thread segue into the wackadoodle Bullis Mom's daughter and her college choices? Who cares? The woman is a vicious spreader of lies about anything and everything related to LHS. I wouldn't believe one word she says.

Langley moms are just as crazy as Bullis mom. Wow!

Now we know how mean girls are created.

Wow! This is the longest website feedback thread i have ever seen. Its hard to follow, but there was a scandal at Langley HS? And this mom is very angry and went to private? Now at Southern Ivey (lol). My take -- Langley does have some pressure, for certain. Bullis is a much more supportive school. Duke, I think is the powerhouse in the South. "potted ivy" of the South?

Duke is not and never will be an Ivy. Ivy's don't give athletic scholarships, and require the athletes to be students. Duke Basketball...

Duke is an ACC, not an Ivy.

Wouldn't most people agree that in general a private school is "more supportive" than a public school? I mean can't we expect some more love for our $25k per year per kid?

Actually, no. Langley parents are simply responding to the wild accusations Bullis mom loves to throw at Langley. She had less than a year's experience at the school (actually, her much-talked about daughter did), felt everyone was out to get her, and decided to "ensconce" (her words) her kid in an expensive private school. Where, as we all know, kids and parents are MUCH more down-to-earth than any public. Nope, no snobbery there.

Plural Ivys? But what schools are they? Don't think Duke is one.

That was the best laugh I've gotten all night. I think it's clear her daughter's at Ole Miss. Or maybe Alabama.

Nope. Tulane. I'm gonna call it. Well regarded Southern school, extremely strong pre-medical program. But I don't understand why BM feels the need to call it a "Southern Ivy." It's a wonderful school in a beautiful and historic city, with a long history and great for her daughter's specialty. But it isn't an Ivy. That doesn't make it worse than an Ivy League school. But trying to get prestige points by appending yourself to something you perceive as having prestige is just...tacky.

You must be kidding. Parents who can afford to spend $25k+ on a school are paying for a rarefied environment, complete with a super-rich student body. How can anyone talk about the "wealth" at a public school like Langley, and then say a private school is somehow more wholesome, or "supportive"? The families who send their kids to the privates in this area are on a completely different wealth level than those whose kids attend publics, even Langley or McLean.

I've had friends pull their kids from public school, only to return after a year at privates because they couldn't stand the constant fundraising, insistence on monetary donations, and kids who've never known anything but luxury, at home and on vacation. They've all said how glad they were to return to the normalcy of public school families and kids. And they were talking about returning to Langley.

Bullis mom has a crazy vendetta against the school and will rant about it to anyone who will listen. Interestingly, there are hundreds of other parents and kids who have enjoyed their time at Langley. But she seems to feel her less-than-one-year's experience there entitles to slam anyone and everyone associated with the school.
