I read this, and think how the better proxy for intelligence is SES, not race. I think every example I've read here says "I paid for a WISC and my child was identified." |
For non-FCPS students (i.e. kids going to private schools) to apply to AAP a WISC is required as part of the admissions process. Do you know of another way to get a WISC done without paying for it? If so, please share. |
What about non-disabled children who score poorly on both intelligence and academic tests?
Shouldn't those children also be represented in academically gifted classes? Its only fair right? |

And that is why qualifying should be guaranteed for the top 1-2% of each cluster. Diversity would follow. |
But it is still race in that if those same kids did not have the money, they would be seen as not AAP ready and people would have said "Well he/she is black/hispanic you shouldn't lower the bar for them. They didn't score 132 on NNAT or CogAT it's lowering standards blah blah blah." When in reality, the child IS gifted but it did not show on those tests. |
Yup, this was exactly my point when I mentioned how well my child was doing and it had nothing to with race. It had everything to do with means but the sad fact is that a significant number of black and Hispanic parents are not able to supplemmykb that way. SES status is a proxy for race and many people think that the lack of achievement is due to race and lack off intelligence when it is due to lack of resources. |
How is this different from a child of any race who doesn't have the money for pay for a WISC? It boils down to SES. Unless you're claiming that the minority child should have been given the benefit of the doubt and admitted without it. |
If there is a white teacher, the non-minority child is more likely to get a better GBRS, which makes a difference. |
How to get the WISC for free?
This is from the George Mason website: http://cap.gmu.edu/page1/page12/page12.html#1 Q: How much does the INDIVIDUAL assessment cost? A : Fees are $380 for cognitive assessment and $700 for cognitive and achievement assessment payable to GMU by cash or check only. Students with documented eligibility for a free or reduced price lunch from any public school system are awarded scholarships covering all testing costs. Fees must be paid in full at the time of the initial appointment. Bounced checks will be pursued according to usual GMU policies and procedures and may include a service charge. |
Bingo!!! |
How would you not be identified? WISC doesn't lie! |
If you can afford Starbucks or McDonald's PS4 or cellphone cable or Dish, you can afford a WISC |
Love it. Because following the same logic people apply to gifted education, some kids have parents who work three jobs and can't play catch with them or afford fees for little league. Or some kids can't hurdle because their legs are too short. How is it fair to consider actual performance? Make sure the teams have balance across SES, race, cultural differences and gender. I'm sure all the kids will "thrive." |
Basketball depends on extreme height , body build, ability, access to training. Note the height [except for point guards]. Add all together and you do see eastern Europeans in the mix. Football has many variables based on position-if you are a larger kid for your school/team you get put on the lines whether or not that would be your natural position if the school/team had more people. In youth football some positions are allocated based on coaches [ie their kid for QB]. Know a guy in the nfl who was given QB and some other slots as a kid but ended up in a different position. Sometimes kids want to do WR [glam position] as opposed to TE. Whatever. Back to AAP. When FCPS changed the tests over 10 years ago to increase diversity it had the unintended consequence of increasing the white-asian GT/AAP population. Scrip the word increase-it was an explosion. One argument against all school based level 4 - all middle schools - is some will be unequal- no critical mass. Howver at administrator discretion those schools could fill classes. |
