+1, except in my family that means "the one who doesn't eat a half gallon of ice cream for dessert and instead eats one scoop.". |
I would agree that women tend to be heavier now, but it's important not to dismiss the serious food and size issues many women had in the 60s and 70s. Women frequently smoked, took meth diet pills, and abused diuretics and laxatives to stay thin. My mother, who has had an eating disorder since adolescence, says she took diuretics her whole pregnancy so her doctor wouldn't yell at her for gaining weight. She was underweight and told to gain only 15 pounds with pregnancy. We definitely all eat too much now, but don't underestimate how screwed up earlier generations were. |
Yes, but she's like 5'1 |
I actually think the smoking is key, for both men and women. |
Yes! My brain wasn't working! You're right. |
No, probably weigh about the same, but I look slimmer since I'm taller and have more muscle than she does. I'm probably about the same size as she was at my age, but again, taller and more muscle-y. My younger sister is shorter and slimmer than us both. |
No. My mom was a chubby child and a very statuesque adult. She is taller and heavier than me, even at my heaviest (197 at 40 weeks pregnant).
However, my adult daughter is taller and a lot thinner than me, despite having been a chubby toddler. |
My mom lost weight after menopause. She found it much easier. I am looking forward to that. |
Yep, but she's dead. Smoked cigarettes for years to keep her weight down, and she died from emphysema. |
No, but we are built completely differently. I'm 5'5" & 135 / size 4, pear shaped (dang I need to lose 10#) & she's 5'9", apple shape and maybe 175? Size 12-14. We both have major food and weight issues though... Thanks, mom. |
Interesting how some posters feel the need to put down their mother's figure in order to compensate for weighing more.
'No but she has a no curves and boyish figure.' 'No, but I actually have breasts.' Your mothers were women with different body types than you. Not male figures and yes she had breasts but likely very small ones compared to you. |
Interesting how people who are thinner feel the need to point out how it's the result of personal virtue, while their fatter relatives are greedy:
|
Yep. |
Agree. |
My mom and I are about the same height, but otherwise utterly different bodies. She has always struggled with weight, while I was able to eat anything and everything until 30. Even now at 35, I'm a good deal slimmer and fitter than she was at my age. But, we've lead very different lives. She had three kids by my age, and I don't recall her taking time for herself. I have one child and play my sport of choice in a somewhat intense league twice a week plus cardio 3 days a week. (I love my dad, but he worked a ton and wasn't always doing a heavy lift as a parent. My husband is much more involved, freeing me up to take time for me) |
