Urgent Question - DH on the Floor with Toothache

Today, they drained the infection, which they said wasn't extreme, and did a partial root canal. They said they may have to pull the tooth, so they stopped before doing a complete root canal (which confuses me), pumped the area and tooth full of pain meds, and told him to come back in two weeks. I am really hoping he feels ok when the meds wear off, since they only gave him 5 days worth of pain pills and antibiotics for the two weeks, !

Glad he is feeling better. I don't understand either but that was what they did w/ my husband as well. (Except I think the follow up was a week, not 2.) Something about needing the infection to be under control. He did end having to have it pulled, though.

Anonymous wrote:Yes ER for the infection - does he have a good endodontist? If it's this bad he's going to need several appointments. Also he's going to need to max out ibuprofen to get the swelling down - no more Tylenol and Vicodin together!!

Thanks, all! They gave him antibiotics at the ER, and he is scheduled with an endodonist later this morning. Right now, he is sleeping, which is progress after a LONG night. Neither he nor I knew about the prescription/OTC mixing issue, but thanks for letting us know.

I don't know how this is even possible. I thought everyone knew Vicodin contains acetaminophen.

+1. It's on the label in huge letters. There's also a lot of news regarding acetaminophen overdosing. It's a HUGE deal. Can cause permanent liver damage. Please, please don't just take things without reading the label. Drug interactions are real.

Well, DH took it without asking me. Before I posted, I asked what he had taken and started gathering up the bottles to take to the ER. According to the "huge letters" on the label, he was within the safe range, but it sounds like a bad idea to take together anyway.

Your DH can't read?

^^ Just stop with this already!

Judging by some of the responses on this thread, I think anti-social personality disorder is probably underdiagnosed.

NP here. Nope, not everyone knows. Frankly, I have never been prescribed Vicodin, so I have absolutely no knowledge of it beyond that it's a prescription painkiller. If I were prescribed it, I would do a little reading on it and when I could take it, but not everyone automatically knows everything about prescription medicines even if they are common.

Same here bi didn't have a clue, but I've never been given the rx

Absolutely. Some people on this board are miserable pieces of shit.

Dentist here. Yes, you are correct. With acute infection, we place antibacterial medication inside the canal to get the infection under control. The last thing you want is to leave any bacteria behind which would cause re-infection of the tooth. Your husband should feel better soon and should not need any meds much longer. Give it a day for the swelling/pressure to go down. If he still has pain a couple of days from now, go back to the dentist. Sometimes, rarely tho, puss will build back up inside the canal, causing pain, and would have to be drained again. GL.

OP, glad he is okay. I had an infected tooth that had a root canal done and it was the worst night of pain in my life. I hope he is feeling better soon!

And you've probably never experience real pain, blinding agony. Which is good. But you have no earthly idea what you would do to make it stop.

I've had two root canals and the preceding pain had me in tears, too. Hope your husband continues to improve, OP.

Ugh - i had the same thing happen years ago, when I was pregnant! Ended up finding an emergency dentist on the weekend and he did the same thing - drained the abscess and did a partial fix. I had to wait until Monday to schedule the root canal, and then had to wait for two more days to get it done, though at the least the partial fix helped.

Did the root canal and later the crown. Tooth aches are the worst!

I have had tooth related pain and given birth to 3 children, including a set of twins.

That tooth infection left childbirth in the dust.

Good luck!
