Yes, way too much. He could take Vicodin and ibuprofen (or another non-acetaminophen NSAID) together. |
| Yes ER for the infection - does he have a good endodontist? If it's this bad he's going to need several appointments. Also he's going to need to max out ibuprofen to get the swelling down - no more Tylenol and Vicodin together!! |
Thanks, all! They gave him antibiotics at the ER, and he is scheduled with an endodonist later this morning. Right now, he is sleeping, which is progress after a LONG night. Neither he nor I knew about the prescription/OTC mixing issue, but thanks for letting us know. |
|
Glad you got him in and that he is sleeping.

I don't know how this is even possible. I thought everyone knew Vicodin contains acetaminophen. |
+1. It's on the label in huge letters. There's also a lot of news regarding acetaminophen overdosing. It's a HUGE deal. Can cause permanent liver damage. Please, please don't just take things without reading the label. Drug interactions are real. |
Well, DH took it without asking me. Before I posted, I asked what he had taken and started gathering up the bottles to take to the ER. According to the "huge letters" on the label, he was within the safe range, but it sounds like a bad idea to take together anyway. |
| OP - I think you are a good wife. Best of luck to your DH. |
|
Friends of our family lost their 24 year old son to acetaminophen overuse. He woke up with jaundice and died three months later of liver failure.
Tylenol is poison, but it's in everything. Read labels, people. |
|
Don't take acetaminophen and drink alcohol - for the same reason.
Of course, if you need to take ANY pain meds, you wouldn't be consuming alcohol... But that's a whole other story. |
| Pharmacies should be making this crystal clear to people. |
Terrifying! The label says 4000 in 24 hours can lead to liver damage - was he exceeding that, or was he at lower levels for a number of days? |
Yes. It's a bad idea. Are you the same poster who didn't know what Advil and Tylenol were? |
| Let's not be too harsh on OP or her DH over the acetaminophen issue. When you are in blinding pain, you're not thinking straight and are desperate to try anything to make it stop. If a grown man is doubled up on the floor crying, he's probably past the point of caring what's in the pills if there's a chance it might work. I have taken way too many Advil at once before because knowing it might give me an ulcer later on in life was outweighed by knowing it would make the hideous cramping stop right now. He'll know for next time, which hopefully there won't be. |
OP here - thanks for this. I was really worried that DH had taken too much by the time I got to him, but I didn't know that you could never mix the two. I did the math, and he was under the limit on the bottle, so I didn't freak out. He definitely wasn't thinking straight in taking it either - he was on the floor crying and saying that he was a big guy so it would be fine. In the meantime, I was consulting google and getting three kids under 5 out of bed and ready to go to the ER (no sitter available). |
