FARMS numbers are up

Its just not realistic to put every kid in a class together when they have significantly different abilities. I hear your concern PP. And its likely a teacher is making some assumptions about your AA kid. But the reason DC got rid of gifted classes was because they were sued since they didn't have enough AA kids most likely due to testing bias. I think the charge for gifted classes needs to be led by AA parents who demand more. DC has just made DCPS standards so low. Many charters become self-selecting in that regard. The parents with high achieving kids often are the same parents who can shuttle their kid across town to a better school, research schools, make multiple open houses etc. And those parents have kids that would do well anywyere. But again, why should high acheving kids get the shaft in DCPS?

If you try to implement an advance program in DC everyone will scream racism because it will end up being all white/asian in certain placed in schools.

And what would they be screaming in schools with few or no white or asian families? I agree with the PP about DCPS standards, but DCPS very clearly attends to the wishes of those who are more affluent. Lower income people can - and do - scream all they want but the label FARMS means that intelligence is about the very last need that will be considered. And if there are mostly black kids in a program for high achievers, white people will complain it's not good enough and/or that resources should be diverted elsewhere to more "deserving" gifted/talented students. Exempli gratia, Banneker, Eastern, CHEC, McKinley, Ellington.

Not really. There is only one EOTP school that didn't have PK3 (Shepherd).

Thanks, i didn't know that about shepherd. I meant that they need not worry about being personally identified, so why not just name the school outright and it will make for a more interesting thread.

S/he didn't mention it because Shepherd is still a predominantly black school, which means that, despite the affluence of its families, the high scores, the gorgeous grounds and building, not many on DCUM care about it.

People do care about shepard but given its location so far North in the city the majority of EoTP parents consider it and then realized the commute would be impossible. We live in Petworth and I have been to meetings at Shepard and its a lovely area. But damn, if I had to deal with any part of 16th street daily it would add at least an extra hour in the morning and the evening to my commute to pick up a kid and then get home to Petworth. People don't ignore the school because its AA. They ignore it because its only convenient for a handful of people willing to drive there if they are not in walking distance.

Crosstown traffic is no treat, yet people still try to get OOB seats at JKLM.

There are also lots of kids from Petworth at Shepherd. North bound is zero traffic and they travel back using GA ave or 14th. Better commute than going east to Mundo Verde or Inspired.

FWIW I associate the far north schools either without regard to their _OTP status, or more with WOTP. I thin most people on or near the Hill feel that way.

Many OOB Shepherd students are from nearby (Takoma, Brightwood, etc.). Believe it or not, there are plenty of people who actually live up here in the nether regions.
