A friend of mine almost became Candice Kane. Parent remarriage and such, but she was very happy that the name change didn't actually occur.

I know a Candice, nn Candy, who married a Kane.

Her husband is Andy.

Haha - this is so damn funny if it's true

I would not associate Kane with Cain, the radio host or Kardashians (I've never seen any show with a Kardashian in it, so have no idea what they are known for other as reality TV personalities).

What I think of when I see the name is Citizen Kane. It's still a negative connotation as I don't particularly like the titular protagonist of the movie. Even knowing his background, he's a pretty distasteful character.

For me Adolph, Benedict (yes, I think of Benedict Arnold when I heard Benedict Cumberbatch's name), Sybil, Lucretia (I have old acquaintances who named their daughter this and I couldn't believe it).

When I hear Lucretia, I think of Lucretia Mott, the abolitionist and women's rights activist.

When I hear Benedict Cumberbatch, I think mmmmm.

I also think of citizen Kane, the bible, and the former governor of NJ (and the college named after him, I presume).

I'm not the PP teacher, but I'm a teacher. Oddly enough, most teachers will tell you that MULTIPLE students with the same names demonstrate similar characteristics. Not just one. Also, kids with overbearing moms end up having their own classroom disrupting traits (probably due to their moms' influence).

It makes a weird kind of sense if you also notice that, IN GENERAL, parents with the same certain preferences/backgrounds/behaviors tend to choose the same names for their children, and parents' influence and attitudes shape children's behavior. Destiny is going to grow up in a different kind of household, with different values, than Caroline. Their behavior will IN GENERAL reflect this, though of course there are exceptions.

This was the first thing that popped into my head too. I was like, what's wrong with that??

Now somebody, (lots of somebodies) please name your beautiful daughters Gwyneth so that they can grow up to do wonderful things and make new associations for that pretty name.

I'm also a teacher, and certain names do have negative connotations at this point. For example, every Devin I've taught has been a handful with an overbearing mom.

I would love to see the Freakanomics author do an extended article/study on name trends and classroom behavior.

Another teacher here- ha ha - this would be an excellent idea. So many otherwise lovely baby names scratched off the list because of my profession.........

Yes, I'm the teacher who posted previously with a list of bad names...I have had multiple students with the names I posted as having bad associations and I agree with the bolded, to a certain degree anyway. Obviously, I'm not going to assume that every student I have named Brayden is going to be difficult, but I've had 3 Braydens who have been 3 of the worst students I've ever taught so it's just something I've thought about in a larger context and concluded that Brayden is a name w/ negative connotations. It's not just based on 1 experience.

On a more personal level either people I've known and disliked or people I have heard of doing bad or distasteful things: Ted, Wayne, Adam, Dylan/Dillon, Patrick, Bryan, Darron/Darren, Ashley, Brittany, Tiffany, Crystal, Lisa, Steve, Monique

And, as a teacher, names of former difficult students: Destiny, Jayden/Kayden/Brayden, Christian, Julian, Dominic, Anthony, Michael, Emma

Ayatollah is a title, not a given name.

yes, I realize that. My first set of 'bad names' was kind of a joke. I sincerely doubt anyone is planning to name their kid Attila or Caligula. I was just coming up w/ a list of evil people.

Most people aren’t that educated and won’t even know the story of Cain and Abel, or which one was the bad one.
