Names with Negative Conotations

I'm also a teacher, and certain names do have negative connotations at this point. For example, every Devin I've taught has been a handful with an overbearing mom.

I would love to see the Freakanomics author do an extended article/study on name trends and classroom behavior.

Yup. Devin, Christian, Jonathan and Jordy are the names that have negative connotations for me as a teacher.

This post reminds me of how I liked the name Leah but didn't choose it for my DD because of the bible story...that and I actually preferred the name I ended up choosing.

I once had a student named Jocasta, which was even worse after it became clear that her mother didn't know who THE Jocasta is... Seriously negative connotation.

My sister had a student named Nemesis. Bad connotation there as well.

That is so funny! Jonathan is a big one for me too.

Have you had many girls named Delaney? That and Madison (in all its spellings) are the girls' names with the most negative classroom connotations for me.

Anonymous wrote:I think Kane is fine, especially since it's your maiden name. I know a few people that have last names that were good for boy names (Julian, Marcus, etc...). Do it!

Also, not everyone is Christian. I wouldn't have made that connection because I don't know the bible stories.

Cain and Abel is not a Christian bible story.

Kane reminds me of Patrick Kane; star pro hockey player in Chicago currently accused of a brutal rape. So just don't move to Chicago right now and you'll be fine

Few would remember this, I think. But Lizzie was always a no-go for me. The skip rope song:

Lizzie Borden had an ax,
she gave her mother 40 whacks,
and when the job was nicely done,
she gave her father 41.
