ISIS Enshrines a Theology of Rape - The New York Times

I read this article and it is just so awful and sickening.

Frontline did a really good documentary on this recently. Pretty much cried my way through it: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/escaping-isis/

Uh, hate to burst your bubble and the entire premise of your post, but he was not in Gitmo. He was detained in Iraq and released in 2004.

Forgive me. Obama shut down that camp in Iraq - he was not exactly a prisoner of another country - he was our prisoner of war.

In 2004?? Bush let this guy go, five years before Obama was inaugurated. What the hell kind of point are you making?

Date is in dispute my friend.

Oh, well then you'll have to tell the CIA. And also you will need to let me know who invented a time machine because Islamic State was discussed in the press years before 2009. My friend. For example: https://web.archive.org/web/20110524071632/http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article1782088.ece

And I guess you'll have to explain how Islamic State was not founded out of Al Qaeda in Iraq . Oh and the fact that they DECLARED THE CREATION OF ISI in 2006 http://www.ft.com/cms/s/e239159e-5c6a-11db-9e7e-0000779e2340.html

Gee here they are in 2007 announcing their cabinet https://web.archive.org/web/20070928061225/http://www.siteinstitute.org/bin/articles.cgi?ID=publications274907&Category=publications&Subcategory=0

But hey, I guess it's in dispute. And please find me that guy who used a time machine to plant these false stories in old newspapers.

Any small faction can start at any time. It's whether they are allowed to grow and how they got their weapons. That's all on Obama.

The power vacuum wouldn't exist without the foolish decision to topple Saddam. The gift that keeps giving courtesy of Bush.

The power vacuum existed because Obama gave up all our men had accomplished. We had Iraq. Obama got the people killed

You like lying to yourself. Does it make you feel better to live in fantasy land? The power vacuum existed once Woolforwitz decided that anyone affiliated with the Baathist could not have jobs. What did you think would happen when a couple thousand former soldiers, scientist, police officers, etc who are suddenly unemployed.

You think she's still pleased with her "success"?

I'm not that lawyer, but I would be okay with it, even after this news. The United States is supposed to be a country that believes in the rule of law. We shouldn't torture and we shouldn't hold people without criminal trials and we shouldn't hold people without granting them free access to the courts. If we do, we are no better than ISIS -- just another group of chimps with sticks chasing another group of chimps with sticks.

If you hold yourself to a higher standard, you are sometimes vulnerable to scum like that. It doesn't mean that you should embrace scumminess, though, and act like them. You just fight harder, within the confines of the law and justice.

It's not about sex. It's not about "life." It's about power and control.

I take it you have never been raped

Not PP. I have been raped. Twice.

PP is not wrong.

You can't eradicate ignorance with a bomb.

Ending poverty and educating the masses (females first, IMO) will, however.

Saudi Arabia, which is hardly poor, remains the #1 source of ISIS fighters and overseas jihadis in general. They are neither poor nor uneducated.

+1. IIRC, several of the 9/11 hijackers were highly educated and from well-to-do families.

What alternate universe do you live in? There was no point after Saddam was toppled that there wasn't violence among the various sects in Iraq.

Why is this even a story? We knew that Kayla Mueller had been held captive, and it was certainly not a leap of logic to assume that she had been raped. Imagine the pain her family must feel by seeing these articles...
