Uh, hate to burst your bubble and the entire premise of your post, but he was not in Gitmo. He was detained in Iraq and released in 2004.

Forgive me. Obama shut down that camp in Iraq - he was not exactly a prisoner of another country - he was our prisoner of war.

In 2004?? Bush let this guy go, five years before Obama was inaugurated. What the hell kind of point are you making?

Date is in dispute my friend.

Oh, well then you'll have to tell the CIA. And also you will need to let me know who invented a time machine because Islamic State was discussed in the press years before 2009. My friend. For example: https://web.archive.org/web/20110524071632/http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article1782088.ece

And I guess you'll have to explain how Islamic State was not founded out of Al Qaeda in Iraq . Oh and the fact that they DECLARED THE CREATION OF ISI in 2006 http://www.ft.com/cms/s/e239159e-5c6a-11db-9e7e-0000779e2340.html

Gee here they are in 2007 announcing their cabinet https://web.archive.org/web/20070928061225/http://www.siteinstitute.org/bin/articles.cgi?ID=publications274907&Category=publications&Subcategory=0

But hey, I guess it's in dispute. And please find me that guy who used a time machine to plant these false stories in old newspapers.

Any small faction can start at any time. It's whether they are allowed to grow and how they got their weapons. That's all on Obama.

Where is the Sheik responsible for the death of this girl on that list of cabinet members? Um. Not there. So if he was released in 2004, seems as if he was not a major ISIS leader yet.

Washington Post article about Baghdadi:

"But the narrative solidifies in 2005, when he was captured by American forces and spent the next four years a prisoner in the Bucca Camp in southern Iraq. It was from his time there that the first known picture of Baghdadi emerged. And it’s also there, reports Al-Monitor, that he possibly met and trained with key al-Qaeda fighters."

"But then Syria happened. The civil war there, which left a vacuum of authority in large tracts of the country, fueled a resurgence of the group. The upheaval gave rise to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Over the following years, as many as 12,000 militant Islamists — 3,000 of whom were from Western countries — flocked to the region to fight, according to the Soufan Group, an intelligence consultancy."

Did you really just compare pro life politicians to ISIS? Your Western privilege is showing, and it's embarrassing.

PS this isn't even an abortion thread. Obsessed much?

I was actually brought up Muslim. Same misogyny, different cloak.

Your Western bias is showing, and it's embarrassing.

It wasn't rape because he made her his WIFE first. Men are allowed to have sex with their wives.

I don't think the us should rescue anyone who ignores travel warnings. It is unfair to put lives at risk to save you. Maybe people would stop behaving so carelessly.

I'm all for charging alleged terrorists and giving them a trial, and if convicted, swiftly punishing them. That would be great.

But I find it deeply disturbing that you have such little understanding of why 'Guantanamo' exists in the first place. You can't have much respect for justice if you support such a concept. As an American, that precedent is pretty damn disturbing.

Prisoners of war. Different rules.

I hope you really don't believe that. If so, I hope that you have been a member of the military. Or you have dear ones who are members of the military. And as such, you are okay being treated badly when one of yours and ours are captured. I was looking at a movie based on real life events. It starred Colin Firth. The torture American and British soldiers endured from their Japanaese captures lasted for many them a lifetime. Their bones and body healed upon release, but the psychological damage was never healed for many. Tortureis never good.

OR... maybe being locked away in Guantanamo is one of the factors that helped lead him to become the insane, evil radical he is?

This is a pattern I have read about other Islamic radicals- even if they are not so extreme when they enter prison, the conditions they endure solidifies their violent views.

The foundation for their rage is laid in childhood.

WTF? We CREATED this entire nightmare. We invaded Iraq, removed all the Baathists, left a power vacuum, supported Malicki who is a huge sectarian scumball, and basically everything we did laid the groundwork for ISIS. If Al Baghdadi had been dead or imprisoned, some other psycho would be doing all of this instead. Don't you know ISIS is recruiting all the time?
Didn't you read the NYT link?

This is OUR fault, and not for letting people out of Guantanamo. Torturing people and putting people in Guantanamo was just shitting on our own values as Americans, which is basically the icing on the cake in this whole situation.

Please go read the NYT link.

I don't know where those ISIS fighters are getting their information...b/c the Quran certainly does not condone the rape of anyone, regardless of their religion...poor brainwashed little bastards

Also I have to agree with the above poster, Iraq was MUCH more stable when Sadam was in power than it is now with ISIS. At least thats my opinion as someone that was born in Baghdad and raised there. You wouldn't believe the stories we hear of what's going on, from family that is still living in that nightmare. You will never see that stuff in the news..

Sadam was a bad guy, but he calmed down a long time ago and was never a threat when we invaded...but the war was all about gaining access to the oil fields anyways.

Yep, Big George warned his son, but he couldn't reason with stupid.

You do know that we have been drone killing their leaders one after another. One goes down, they prop a new one up.

Someone (a lot of people) really want to gin up a "more boots on the ground" war with ISIS - as though that would solve the problem. A white lady getting raped really adds to that emotional narrative.

You can't eradicate ignorance with a bomb.

Ending poverty and educating the masses (females first, IMO) will, however.

Truth is the first casualty of war.
Women are like free game, you go and hunt and take.
A womans consent is irrelevant.

What did you think war was?

The power vacuum wouldn't exist without the foolish decision to topple Saddam. The gift that keeps giving courtesy of Bush.
