It's time to legalize polygamy...

Religious freedom. Hopefully conservatives will support religious freedoms?

Mandatory declaration of intent of polygamy at first marriage? Mandatory notification of present spouse about new spouse? Waiting period for existing spouse to opt out? Mandatory minimum incomes? Agree it can get complicated. Might have to borrow laws and rules from countries that already do this. But it can be done.
My feeling is that the man should have to state that he intends to be polygamist BEFORE marrying the first wife. Nor surprises. Or, the couple may be able to check a box MONOGAMOUS. If he changes his mind, big fine.
Also, minimum income to get a second spouse. Not an income that comes from the first wife, but a from the husband.
Maybe each of these cases might need to be handled on a case by case basis like an adoption. Each family puts in for approval, based mostly on income.
I guess only 5% of men max would want more than one wife. So it is not a big deal.

Why should it be one man married to more than one woman? If equality then one woman should also be able to marry more than one man, or now between one man and more than one man or between one woman and more than one woman.

If polygamy is legal, then cheating loses its meaning. You cannot accuse dh of cheating because he is doing what is legally permissible to him: finding a 2nd wife (or husband).

No one said that one woman could not have more than one husband if polygamy was legal.
Anyway, from what I have read, those polygamous families do not tolerate "cheating". Most of the FLDS families allow sex only after marriage.

Guys, there's a whole world of poly people who aren't religious. It's a pretty interesting world, in which kids are being raised, people are holding down jobs, mortgages get paid.

It even exists in DC.

This world is often way way way less salacious - or damaging to kids, or women - than what you're imagining, if this is your first time thinking about what it means to have more than one partner with whom you build a life.

Here's a book you may enjoy if you want to know more about what day to day life is like for people in poly relationships:

Taxes are only a small part of the marriage benefits package under the law.

People cheat already in normal marriages. People that are married change their sexual orientation and/or gender. Checking a box is crazy. Consider Caitlyn Jenner who later changed gender

A friend of mine told me that her father had two wives in Kenya. He just all of a sudden came home and told wife #1 that he wanted to get another wife. She had no idea that he'd ever consider such a thing. She had like 8 of his kids. She was powerless to do anything. Divorce would have left her penniless.
I support the legalization, but people need to know what they are getting into. What Bruce Jenner did was unconscionable. Gay people who marry straight then switch get no respect from me. This stuff is just unnecessarily messy.

You do know gay and transgender are different, right?

That's called polyandry and it has long existed in some traditional societies.

I would LOVE to see what the Mormon Church would do if plural marriage became legal. Would be a real conundrum for them.

why a conundrum?

Sorry, PP, just got back to this.

They have made a BIG stance on not thinking polygamy is part of this life, downplaying polygamy in the founders of the church, etc.

If the law changed and then, wow, suddenly there's a revelation that it's okay in this life - it just reinforces the view that they do whatever is politically expedient (a big criticism of the Mormon church).
If the law changed and they DIDN'T bring back polygamy, they'd be going against some of their scriptures and history.

Here's an article that outlines some of the pressures the LDS Church would face if polygamy became legal: http://www.ibtimes.com/utah-polygamy-ban-reversal-bad-news-lds-church-mormon-scholar-1673848

My dream has always been to have 3 husbands and a wife. I'd love that to happen. Maybe it will.

You can always start by cohabitation, then show the world how virtuous your arrangement is. Then after a few generations of people like you, maybe you will persuade the public.

Call me old fashioned. I believe that children do best in a loving home with a father and a mother.
The efforts to undermine this model and to promote non-traditional families will do nothing but create more societal problems.

You are actually ignorant rather than old fashioned. It has been proven time and time again that there is no difference to the child's well-being and future success whether we was raised by two mothers, two fathers or a father and a mother. (Actually, children of gay parents are out-scoring those of straight parents in all academics).

I personally will be in favor of polygamy when I see one wife who has three or four husbands.

That's largely because children of gay parents were most likely conceived of donors who are generally screened for health, psychological soundness, and iq. You're not really comparing apples to apples here.

If one mother and one father produce favorable outcomes wouldn't adding fathers and mothers be advantageous?
