Exactly. Which is exactly why gay marriage is now legally recognized. When the government decided to recognize (grant specific legal status and benefits to) one type of committed relationship between consenting adults (heterosexual marriage) that then obligated it to grant the same status to any consenting adult arrangement, in my opinion, because it is not the government's business and thus the government should not be favoring one loving relationship over another.

Really, so for the thousands of years that governments throughout the world have recognized marriage between men and women, they should have also been recognizing it between men+men and women's+women?

I guess only 5% of men max would want more than one wife. So it is not a big deal.

In all the polyamourous relationships I've heard of, it consists of a bisexual female, her husband, and her girlfriend. I'm assuming that if polygamous marriage were legalized in this country, we'd see way more of that model than the husband with 5 wives. At least outside of Utah.

It's actually quite simple -- no workplace benefits for any spouses! The idea that a spouse should get benefits even though he or she doesn't work there, is a relic of the 1950's era when the man worked and the woman stayed home. Today the spouse almost certainly has his or her own job, and spousal benefits are a relic of history

I am supportive of plural marriage and have been for as long as I can remember. Mostly my position is "If they aren't abusing anyone/anything and aren't involving minors, let them be."

I would LOVE to see what the Mormon Church would do if plural marriage became legal. Would be a real conundrum for them.

I agree there are some real logistical challenges to plural marriage because of how our tax, socoal security, benefit, housing, etc laws are set up.

Why should it be one man married to more than one woman? If equality then one woman should also be able to marry more than one man, or now between one man and more than one man or between one woman and more than one woman.

If polygamy is legal, then cheating loses its meaning. You cannot accuse dh of cheating because he is doing what is legally permissible to him: finding a 2nd wife (or husband).

No. There are a variety of legal rules, inheritance, tax, etc. that are directed to two people. But more pragmatically, the two main problems with plural marriage, not exclusively, are child sex abuse and welfare fraud.

I am a smart single woman raising 3 kids - exhusband is out of the picture and not contributing financially, why do I not get the same tax break on my home that a married person would get? 250k vs 500k for the increase in value?

Actually, our western culture is built on romantic love, between two people. There are other cultures that have a different kind of love, not romantic love.
