I totally agree! Thought that was awful.

I would keep my kids out of the water.

+1. Usually they have the taste to post a stock photo of the beach in question. That was repugnant.

We are going to Hatteras soon and my kids will be permitted in the water as usual. We are usually out of the water by 4 PM anyway, back at the house getting everyone showered and dinner started. I will make sure we stick to that this year.

Okay... so now... we all agree... no going into the water if you are having your period.

I don't want the kids in the water at all but DH thinks I'm going overboard. These kids were attacked in waist-deep water in the same area... WWYD? Luckily we have a pool to swim in but I do feel bad saying no ocean when we're at the beach.

I'd stick to the pool. Usually I wouldn't get all chicken little over the situation but it was three attacks in shallow water, so I'd keep my children and myself out of the ocean.

Agree. Not to mention potentially traumatizing for the viewer!

Don't go swimming near a fishing pier. I actually know someone who was bitten by a shark. She was swimming in an area where they were throwing chum into the water.

We are going to Carolina Beach which is 48 miles from Oak Island. I have always followed the duh rules of no swimming near piers or fishermen and not at dusk but am still a but hesitant about having my kids swimming IN the water. I'm thinking it'll just be a see when we get there situation.

How shallow was the water they were swimming in?

That sounds like a gross place to go for a swim.

Whatever you do, stay away from women on their periods.

Sounds like your chum was chum. Sorry. Couldn't resist.

As for the poor kiddos who were bitten, I would note that the pictures show a pier not very far from where they were pulled out of the water (and thus were presumably swimming). Unfortunately, those ares tend to form natural reefs and people fish/chum off many piers. All of these things attract sharks to the areas around it. Not everyone knows of, remembers, or thinks about these things (I know I often don't and probably should). Who knows if this shark was drawn to the immediate area by the pier or not. But, that's my theory.

This is true. If you are near a pier - don't go in the water.
