Shark attacks in NC - wwyd?

Anonymous
OP I agree with others not to swim in the later afternoon.

But these attacks were somewhat near Ocean Crest Pier, which people fish off of.....with bait.....which could have attracted the shark(s).

So I'd stay away from fishing areas, too.

Loved playing in the ocean as a kid. Then I saw the movie Jaws. Changed my life forever. My parents joke about "Before Jaws" and "After Jaws".

Just don't go out during feeding time (early morning and late afternoon).

I don't think most of the beaches on that area have lifeguards.

Really? Are they public beaches? With no lifeguards? Wow, that's crazy.

How sheltered are you? Most beaches I've visited in the US don't have lifeguards.

Did a google, not seeing anything about a 3rd attack, have a link?

Resort beaches? I'm not a big beach person, but it's insane not to have lifeguards at resort beaches with lots of swimmers like this. Huge safety hazard. But I guess it's the same mentality as areas that don't provide fire department services unless you pay the annual fee. Let your house burn down. Taxes, who needs them.

I can't remember the last beach we went to that had lifeguards (resort or no resort).

Go to OC , assateague , Delaware beaches. No shark attacks ever.

The NC beaches aren't really "resort" beaches. They are completely different than Ocean City and etc. The NC beaches stretch for hundreds of miles and a lot of that beach space just has a handful of people even in prime beach season. We rented a house last year on a part of an island that was only three houses wide from the beach to the sound.

Personally, if a beach is crowded enough to make lifeguards reasonable, a lot of people won't want to go there.

1) these aren't resort beaches, 2) that's quite a straw man comparison to fire services you've constructed there, 3) people don't need their hands held through every step of their lives. Personal responsibility matters.

As for the poor kiddos who were bitten, I would note that the pictures show a pier not very far from where they were pulled out of the water (and thus were presumably swimming). Unfortunately, those ares tend to form natural reefs and people fish/chum off many piers. All of these things attract sharks to the areas around it. Not everyone knows of, remembers, or thinks about these things (I know I often don't and probably should). Who knows if this shark was drawn to the immediate area by the pier or not. But, that's my theory.

yes, i read that one of the kid who was bit was swimming right next to the pier which is a very bad idea. Really not smart to swim near a place where the is bait in the water.

I think it's alarming though statistically I realize the chances of getting bitten by a shark are really low. It's one of the reasons I hate swimming in the Atlantic - not the sharks but the fact that you can't see what's in the water easily (as you can in, say, clear Caribbean waters). Anyway, I think I'll keep my kids in the pool this year.

You know what I hate about America in 2015? That most people don't bat an eyelash that someone was snapping camera photos of a child suffering from a shark bite. And most news outlets have no compunction about showing the photos. Huge invasion of her privacy and really just revolting morally.

I'm also not to keen to let the kids play in the ocean this year. I think pools are just fine
