+1. I had the same reaction. It's not a terribly smart idea. Either she'll drop that fast...or I'd be concerned.

I've lived and schooled in DC my whole life. Love this city. I would NEVER refer to DC as a "dangerous inner city". Like any city in the USA there are areas where violence is greater than others. When my family moved out to the Md suburbs they worried about me because after watching TV News reports on incidents of violence, they imagined the reports were representative of the entire city. This is common in the successful "marketing" of the "business" of everyday racism. It's a "major brand" being etched into the psyche...being internalized. The system that sells racism is doing a fantastic job. Millions of Americans believe DC is a dangerous inner city. My friends and I are the obvious insane. We feel safe here.

Here's the deal with the new principal. She'll last maybe a year. She thought she was going to a low performing public school where she could hang out the banner and hide and slide. Wilson will be worse than Aspen. Much worse. Much, much worse. The parents will eat here alive, not the students, the parents.

Maybe she just didn't want to publicize what schools she was considering at this point in time and during that particular interview with the student paper, so she told the student interviewer that she wasn't sure.

I think she just lied. she could have said something vague like she was considering various options and she still had not made a decision. instead, she said that she was definitely going to live in the District (so no MOCO), and that she was not sure whether her child could go to Wilson or had to go to the school was he was IB for ("I just don’t know how the schooling works, if he goes to the school that I’m at or if he goes to the school that’s nearest to our house"). this is total BS. she knows that she is getting free gym membership in her package from DCPS but she has no idea about her teenager's schooling in a town known for having some good and some very bad schools? she did not need to lie but I believe she did, and this is not good.

Great point about knowing about the gym membership but not...

Or even a plan for improving some of the ills in urban education.

But why lie? Whether she was lying or simply inarticulate, she didn't come across well in the interview.

70% of her job is knowing what good instruction looks like at the high school level and how to lead teachers. It's about having a vision and how to communicate that. It's about knowing how to listen to students, teachers and parents and how to build relationships.

Knowing the registration policies of DCPS is NOT something I want my son's principal focused on right now. There are plenty of people who can get her up to speed on that and handle those matters. If it's so important to you that this lady know the registration policies of DCPS, then so be it. I'm more concerned that she has the ability to lead.

think you missed the point. it is perfectly ok that she moves to DC and has no idea about the registration policies of DCPS (although knowing the registration policies would also help her understand who her students will be and thus help her prepare for how to serve them). it is not likely and believable that she accepted the job without having an idea of where her son will go to school.

And knowing the registration policies of DCPS is somewhat academic when DCPS does such a poor job of enforcing them. For example, consider the Students burrowed into Wilson and some of its feeders who actually live, not even in DC, but in places like PG County.
