how much was your engagement ring?

Same here, but we both already owned houses, or I'd completely agree with the PP about investing more wisely. I still think it's a racket and would have preferred CZ; this was a "used" diamond in a custom platinum setting...I Gorman had the same thing for ~20k at the time.

$14,000. He paid cash.

We both owned houses, so I think the "should have been used as a down payment" argument is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. What would we have done with a third? Stop with the stupid assumptions.

Do you think that most couples getting married own two homes already?

I love it and wear it fearlessly.

What type of ring is it?

10k. way too much at the time, but ok in the long run.

Who said should have? That's what WE did with the money.

The article points out that the diamond engagement game is a fairly recent racket (last 100 years) and genius marketing by DeBeers to make something that is actually not very rare at all seem priceless. If your rock is worth 14k to you, awesome for you, right?

I didn't buy it, so...

Yeah, I was just wondering this. How do so many of you know how much it cost? I have no clue!

Funny thing is, i was obsessed with a nice ring, having it big, and costing alot. I wanted to show it off, have it sparkle flawlessly and of course, it would be with me forever!

Flash forward a year later, and im finding every excuse to take it off. Dishes, shower, gardening, swimming, working out, and after the baby so i dont scratch him. Ehh, i wish he spent less now.

You've been engaged a year, yet you have a baby? and 1 carat is pretty standard, I'd say.

I handle the finances, and added a rider to our homeowner's policy to cover the ring. The company asked for the appraisal. That's how I found out. Does your husband handle the insurance stuff?

dh spent 18k. we shopped together. he told me exactly how much he felt comfortable spending and to figure out what i liked. seemed sensible to be open and honest about the whole thing since we were going to enter a partnership.

Mine is appraised at around 10k. No idea what the sticker price was. About 12k with the band. Took a little getting used to to walk around with that much money on my left hand, but its a beautiful set and I adore it. DH used inheritance money from his grandfather for it, which add special meaning to us.

Mine cost $0 because I don't have one. We went and looked at some but I didn't love anything, certainly not thousands of dollars worth of love, and I did not feel any need to get a ring just so I could tell people I was engaged. Have been married 10 years and have never missed it.

(Just thought I'd participate to bring down the average in case the OP is calculating how much her boyfriend needs to spend, or something.)

Lab grown sapphire set in silver. It is low key and pretty, and was given with love.

I know because we went together to get the ring after the ring he proposed with was way too big. Instead of just doing the writing the number on paper thing that some people do, he just told the sales lady his budget
