That's what we did-paid $300 for the engagement AND wedding rings set, put a down payment on a condo in 1995-condo was $57000 and we sold it in 2005 for $137500. Put the $ in the bank and rented for 3 years and then bought a big house at the bottom of the market, which has since gained at least $50,000 in equity.

We have since replaced the rings with inexpensive titanium bands, perfect for our line of work (movement and in weather). And we're planning our 20th anniversary this year! I'm SO glad we spent our limited funds on that condo instead of a ring!

I would never "upgrade." That being said, if he had skipped the diamond and we had just done bands, that would have been fine with me too.

"May your marriage last as long as the payments on your ring."

$7000 for 0.5 carats?!?!! Little blue box prices...

Luckily, I already owned a house when DH proposed, so neither of us needed to save for a downpayment.

Me too! My great-grandmas.

Fact: the more your engagement ring cost, the more he loves you and the more success your marriage will have. Remember that expensive diamonds are forever.

[but seriously, what's the point of these ridiculous posts? to constantly compare yourself? your worth? your wealth? I don't get it]

I think it was 11K or 12K. About 1.5 carat solitaire, excellent quality. Dumb decision at the time, but it's paid now!

+1. My husband offered to buy me one but my mom had her grandmas. He got it fixed and gave it to me. No point in him going into debt unnecessarily.

who says you have to go into debt?

I think it was $3500-$4000.

$7,000 for my 1 Karat.

Funny thing is, i was obsessed with a nice ring, having it big, and costing alot. I wanted to show it off, have it sparkle flawlessly and of course, it would be with me forever!

Flash forward a year later, and im finding every excuse to take it off. Dishes, shower, gardening, swimming, working out, and after the baby so i dont scratch him. Ehh, i wish he spent less now.

I love it and wear it fearlessly.

$1600 for a beautiful sapphire ring. Not a fan of diamonds.
