MS Magnet letters are starting to arrive

Anonymous
I asked the JHU-CTY folks if they would take the results of the magnet scat a couple of years ago. Was told it's an older version of their test and not as difficult as the newer versions.

Interesting. My child reported that it (magnet math) was easier than practice tests he had looked at.

Did your son look at the SCAT practice tests?

Of course not. Mail delivery across the county is not consistent. Many letters may not arrive until Monday. I believe you are informed either way.

It is the DECISIONS that get mailed for every candidate - acceptances and rejections - at the same time. However, the actual mailing happens over SEVERAL days physically. Which means that you can get your decision next week or even the week after.

According to MCPS website - you will receive the decisions by early Feb, and can appeal by Feb 21st. So, you will hear from them before Feb 15th. And obviously before Feb 21st.

The meetings for prospective students are the 10-11 so they need to send the letters out. I bet they've all been mailed.

No, they haven't been mailed yet.

Certainly call if you do not get it in the mail by the end of next week - but not all mail is sent on the same date. I have been through this process a few times now personally, and all the letters come within a few days of each other.

Not getting the letter only means that it is 1) either not been mailed yet or 2) it has not been been delivered. Nothing more and nothing less.

There is no reason to believe that they haven't all been mailed. The staggered mailing theory makes no sense, especially when some of the magnets stated that they would mail on Friday (not that they would start to mail).

Not a theory. Someone who works in RCMS told me that. I am assuming that TP and Eastern may follow their own schedule or process.

Regardless, people will hear this week. If you do not get a letter, you should call. All the decisions - admitted, waitlisted, declined - get mailed the same time.

Yes they get mailed at the same time which is inconsistent with your theory.

It is difficult for the kids (and their families) to have the news trickle in like this. MCPS should email all results at the same time.

Colleges are emailing acceptances nowadays, and then follow up with the paper confirmation that usually takes a week or so to come by mail.

I think for MCPS to do that will mean additional expense. They can email or they can have a webpage where parents can use the student id # to find out if they are admitted or not.

What would the additional expense be?

LOL. I do not work in MCPS. But I can guess. They will need their web-team to make a webpage, and perhaps have some sort of database where the info is loaded. However, they will actually need some man power and process - by which some one will load the data after verifying it. Before all that, there will be a need to actually write out the proposal for this "enhancement", project requirements, business rules, use cases, someone will have to do QA and testing.

It is not hard to do, but it will not be done on the fly either.

Are they in big manilla envelopes?

Eastern's was in a big Manila envelope. It included other paperwork.
