Dashiell?

I am surprised that so many people on this board don't know how to pronounce it or don't make the connection, but naming your kid for a classic American author isn't the worst thing you can do.

Signed, I gave my children the names of two characters from this author's work.
Ignore the haters, OP!

+1. My first thought was Dashiell Hammet, second was Dash from the Incredibles. Can anyone name a famous AA named Dashiell?

OP here - thanks for the responses (and by the way, I am the OP of the Zora post too! Finding out gender this week, so considering names for both right now).

And the impression of it being an AA name is not a deterrent to us - not really sure why PPs mention that as if it should be. I didn't know that DCUM was a white-only forum, or I wouldn't have posted here.

Nicholas and Nora. They're twins.
Hi, everybody! I've just outed myself on DCUM!

I usually love unusual names but not this one. I think it's pretty bad.

But Nick and Nora, the literary characters, apparently have a very happy, um, marital relationship...

Well, no worries. Evidently nobody has heard of Dashiell Hammett anyway, and therefore will not be thinking these thoughts.

Heh. Mom of N&N here. Yes, I considered the married vs. sibling thing, but I'm okay with it.
I think of it this way. The book characters were a good team, a good foil for each other. I wanted my kids to also be good partners.
I do occasionally run into people who do hear there names for the first time, and then they give me a big smile and say "Thin Man! That's so great!" I haven't received any negative responses from folks who know the reference, so either it doesn't bug them, or they have a good poker face!
I think it can be fun to pick a name with a reference that some people will get, while not being a hugely popular/obvious choice.

Really? I would assume a fan of The Maltese Falcon.

Thursday might be good.

I like Zora and Dashiell. Good taste in names. Literary, uncommon, but don't cross over into "trying too hard" territory.

+1. Love Zora and like Dashiell a lot. Both definitely lean hipster but my DD has a "hipster name" per DCUM/every hipster-baby-name list ever, and no one IRL has ever commented on it other than to say it's lovely. If they don't like it they are polite enough to keep their mouths shut. If you love the names, go for it OP.

I like Dashiell, my goddaughter's best friend at nursery is called that and she calls him Dash which is very sweet.

One of Cate Blanchett's is called Dashiell, so you're in good company.

I like them both too!

I know one, and it's OK, but I do think it's borderline trying too hard. It's also the kind of name that is hard to hear and when you say it fast sounds like a lot of other boys' names. In the class of the Dashiell I know there is also a Malcolm and Mitchell and they all kind of sound the same when said by kids.
