I wouldn't worry about the opinions of people who clearly don't know how to pronounce the name and think of it as "low SES AA". FFS.

It reminds me of a proper, dapper British dude. I really like it tho! Dash is a great nn.

And the impression of it being an AA name is not a deterrent to us - not really sure why PPs mention that as if it should be. I didn't know that DCUM was a white-only forum, or I wouldn't have posted here.

I love that you authored both threads! I think both names are great.

OP. Here is what I have learned on DCUM. My son's name is stupid, I am stupid, I am a geek, I am trying to get attention through my child, the name is made up, the name is horrible, my son will scarred for life, he will never get a job b/c people will throw his resume away BUT in real life people don't even think twice about it. Occassionally people mishear and call him the wrong name every once in a while we get a "wow that's cool". But generally people don't comment on kids names. I still love the name and am glad I chose it and can't imagine calling him anything else.

People in real life are never as rude as they are here. The garbage folks are spewing on DCUM will never be heard in real life.

Your names are both wonderful so I hope you go with whichever suits the gender of the baby. If I ever meet you and DC in the park I will be sure to say I love the name b/c I really do.

And she used the absolutely moronic spelling of Dashel.

Didn't woody and Mia name one if their kids Dashiell? That alone would make me reject the name.

Really? I would assume a fan of The Maltese Falcon.

+1

I like it, OP!! People might call him Dash, which is cute. Go for it!!

"Dash" is what Lillian Hellman called Dashiell Hammett. (Now people are going to ask whether Lillian Hellman was related to the mayonnaise.) For what it's worth, Wikipedia says that Dashiell was Dashiell Hammett's mother's last name. Also he's a local boy, born in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

Ha ha Mayonnaise joke. Nice

I had no idea he was from Maryland.

Why would you assume that somebody named Dashiell was African-American?

i honestly can't tell you, but i would. i just asked dh and he said the same. maybe because of the ending sound? would you assume someone named, say, marquel was black? i would. (not african-american necessarily, btw, but black). this is purely anecdotal of course, and that assumption may not matter to OP, but it does exist.

Did you read the thread? (I know you didn't read the books....) You are not pronouncing it correctly.

Yes, by all means, only accept opinions with which you agree. Because, really, an opinion only counts when it's in line with your own.

Go away moron. Ignorant opinions should never be considered as it is impossible for the ignorant mind to form one that could be considered valid. How can one really have an opinion on a name they are totally uninformed about - including how to pronounce it. That alone makes said opinion null and void.

I hope you are not pregnant. You and your husband have no business procreating. I feel nothing but pity for your kid/future kids.

Aww, I know how to pronounce it. Bless your heart.

I like it, OP--associations are Dashiell Hammett, and then the Incredibles. (I do also think hipster, though, if that's something you'd see as a bad thing.) I'd just be sure you're okay with Dash as a nickname, since I think it's hard to avoid. I also love Zora (though prefer Zorah spelling!)

In full disclosure, though, I have a kid with another name that is apparently both hipster and AA according to DCUM. We are neither, but there ya go.

Cousin named Dashiell. Love the name. He is 22 years old.
