Heh. Mom of N&N here. Yes, I considered the married vs. sibling thing, but I'm okay with it.
I think of it this way. The book characters were a good team, a good foil for each other. I wanted my kids to also be good partners. 
I do occasionally run into people who do hear there names for the first time, and then they give me a big smile and say "Thin Man! That's so great!" I haven't received any negative responses from folks who know the reference, so either it doesn't bug them, or they have a good poker face!
I think it can be fun to pick a name with a reference that some people will get, while not being a hugely popular/obvious choice.
