Have you ever considered why your favorite songs feature the N word so heavily? None of my favorite songs have any racial, ethnic, or religious slurs in them. Would you feel as comfortable rapping to a song that used "k*ke", "w*tback", "c*nt", or "f*ggot"? Do you feel you get a pass because a black person wrote the song and is singing it? If so, how would you feel about a female artist singing a song that referred to herself and/or other women using misogynistic slurs? |
| Never - what a bizarre question? People don't really do that secretly. I mean not sane, normal people. |
| I never use it and do not think it. I have had AA friends my whole lif (except college). In high school there were some kids bussed into my school for one of our programs. /they were bright, hardworking good citizens. One day I was sitting next to one of the (AA) girls that I was somewhat friendly with and this other very popular girl starts talking like she is black and using the n word. I was very embarrassed. I looked at the girl next to me and said something like "that's not cool." and she smiled very shyly at me. Kind of like " I have to deal with this shit all the time." We became very good friends and kept in touch through college. She told me right after graduation that I was one of the few people she felt she could relax around at school. It broke my heart. |
REALLY!?
Black person here! It's totally unacceptable for anyone to use it especially a black person. I will not associate with anyone who uses the n-word. |

No, it is neither worse nor better for a black person to use it. There aren't different rules for blacks and whites when it comes to racial slurs, so let's stop acting like there are. It's an ugly word that can't be divorced from either its historical context or its current popular association with a specific "urban" sub culture. --another Black person |
Not the PP, but both "c*nt" and "f*ggot" are in one of my favorite songs. It's not used in a derogatory way. "You've got no c*nt in your strut. You've got no hips to shake." "You want them to see you like they see every other girl. They just see a f*ggot. They'll hold their breath not to get your sick." The singer is transgendered. I don't find it offensive. I listen to rap with the n word, but don't use it myself. |

AA here.
Used to use it all the time with my friends as a teenager. Stopped immediately when a road rager said it to me with malice. I cannot describe the feelings I had that day. I still remember the incident vividly. So...no...I do not say it and it is not allowed to be said in our home. I am not naive to think that my 4 teens do not say it with their friends, but they have heard ad nauseum our objections about the word. |
Still not acceptable even then. --signed, a black person |
Thanks for this. |

OP, never admitted to saying it, btw. Seems like the question was intended to provoke. I would even venture to say OP may even be from a minority group and wanted to see what the real sentiment was.
I'm in a mixed race marriage and DH has been called the N word by road ragers in DC in 2014. Otherwise, he doesn't hear it. I shudder to think what I will do if someone ever uses it to describe my children. DH has a pretty good perspective, though, and always says it says more about the user than anything else. |

As a black person, this is why I find rap music disturbing! People think that they get special passes to spit out racist, homophobic, and misogynistic venom. Even without the use of the n-word, rap music degrades and exploits women of color. Yes, there is a "very small percentage" of rap artists (which the mainstream music industry doesn't promote) who have positive messages. However, the majority of rap music is poisonous on so many levels. People who support and patronage abuse in the mask of art are sick! If you find it impossible to not use the n-word, then maybe you need to began listening to music which doesn't promote stereotypes. If you're black and listen to this crap, then your parents didn't raise you right. If you're white and listen to this crap, then you are embracing the degradation of black people. Using the n-word is not cool! It is disgusting and deplorable no matter who uses it.
