Almost 50% of Marylander's wish they could leave MD.

Born and raised Marylander.

Pros: LOVE that I have access to the beach, mountains and a major metropolotain city; the schools; diversity/cultured people; short drive to other major metropolotain cities on the east coast.

Cons: Shitty attitudes of people, especially in MoCo; cost of living; a one party state (and it is not the party I support).

I stay here mainly because family is here and with three, small kids, it would be dumb to move away from family, but I do also stay here becuase I think it is a really great place to live and raise a family. I just disagree with the politics and the poor attitudes of the people around here (not holding doors, saying "Please" or "thank-you", aggressive driving, general saltiness)

Looking at that map, even Virginia was ranked as above average for people wanting to leave. I bet a lot of that is from NoVa. I dislike this area because of the cost of living.

It's not about taxes for me (try NY state if you think taxes are high here). Its about traffic, overcrowded schools, etc. I long for a slower pace and smaller community.

Its actually split - western MD and the eastern Shore are red and the suburbs and urban areas are blue. But the fact that the majority of folks vote blue is a "pro" to me not a con!

Maryland doesn't have the top schools in the nation by a long shot. Virginia, California, etc have better state schools. Other states definitely have better private colleges.

Maryland does, in fact, have the best public schools in the nation. I wasn't speaking about higher education. Although I would argue that while Virginia schools may have more cachet (UVA, William and Mary), Maryland's public colleges are great. St. Mary's is a hidden gem. UMBC is becoming a powerhouse and College Park has some stellar departments.

If we stay in MD - I'm going to push hard for this school for my daughter.

If you take Montgomery and Howard County Schools out of the equation it will definitely a different story. The fact that both Howard and Montgomery County Public Schools carry the state of Maryland is interesting. Outside of those two counties the schools in Maryland are terrible. People in PG County aren't faking addresses to send their children to DC Charters for nothing. People in Baltimore City aren't paying for private schools or fleeing to northern Baltimore County schools for nothing. Hell, some folks in northern Baltimore County are fleeing to York, PA. Almost all of the schools in York County are now flooded with students from Maryland which has created problems up there.

Now I really like Maryland and I used to reside there. However, let's not pretend that the schools in the entire state are on the level of Howard and Montgomery County Public Schools. The schools in Baltimore City aren't even fit my dog.

Anne Arundel schools are quite good!

We're not thrilled with MD.

1. The state school system is not as good as VA. No one believes that UMBC is a powerhouse, how ridiculous!
2. MCPS is a major disappointment. I don't mind taxes if the quality of education is strong but its not.
3. Pepco is very bad.
4. Very few job opportunities in MD. VA keeps growing in the tech sector but MD seems to only be residential. Even the biotech corridor is empty. I worry about the long term resale of our house with the declining school system and other areas offering closer housing to professional work places.

When we first moved there, the grade schools were not even an option in Baltimore city. Kids shot each other and violence was the norm in city schools. That year at Lake Clifton, there were 6 shootings - in the school.

The prep schools had their own set of issues and produced an entitled class of people. The concept of laws is a joke to many in Baltimore- ie Doug Ganslers drunken teens party. Yes - I partied with plenty of kids parents as a teen and the alcohol flowed.

Baltimore city is a wretched den of addicts. They estimated it at 30 thousand in the early 90s. By the end of that decade the estimate was revised upward to 70,000 addicts in a city that fell below 700,000 people around that time.
The area around Hopkins hospital is a disgrace.

Horrible state. So glad I left!

I guess you haven't been there lately.

I have. It's still a disgrace. Have you been paying attention? (Apparently not).

I have lived in MD since 1990 and I want to move - but it has NOTHING to do with Maryland itself. This area has been great to build a career in and raise a family in. I am from somewhere else and I came to the DC area to get a job after college. Part of the reason that stayed this long is because of the family-oriented spin in the this area. Now that I am empty nester, the only thing keeping me here is the job - and that is ture with most people I know. I know that I will not retire here.

This poll is ridiculous and misleading. Who wants least to move -- South Dakotans? Montanans? What this poll measures is the fraction of residents who are professionals that move states and would like to retire. The people who don't want to move seem to be people with family in the area. Not exactly a referendum on MD government (or any other government).

Baltimore murder map.

To the PP with the one-line snarky comment on how wonderful and safe Baltimore city has suddenly become (at least in her dreams).

Are you seriously listing PG County as a positive?

Oh god, not another "family values" type! Yes please leave.

Seems most all of DCUM Marylanders who are posting on this forum are from
- Montgomery County
- Prince George's County
- City of Baltimore / Baltimore County

To be expected, given that this is a DC forum and proximity to the city. But again, these weigh ins all on MoCo still are NOT reflective of the state. Anne Arundel, Calvert, St. Charles, Howard County are under represented here in building local perspective, and even those counties aren't representative of the whole state of MD either. The discussion is on the STATE not the county.

That is like saying Fairfax best represents ALL of Virginia as a state.
