Maryland does, in fact, have the best public schools in the nation. I wasn't speaking about higher education. Although I would argue that while Virginia schools may have more cachet (UVA, William and Mary), Maryland's public colleges are great. St. Mary's is a hidden gem. UMBC is becoming a powerhouse and College Park has some stellar departments. |
MD sucks and I left (3rd gen.). It's gone downhill considerably in MoCo anyway. And you couldn't pay me to live (again) in the Baltimore area omg it's the most ghetto place I've ever seen in my life. And the eastern shore is all farms. The Appalachia panhandle is hillbilly. There's Fredneck. Howard county, while improved, is a suburb of Baltimore. I would only live there if I was African American due to the lack of in NoVA. I wouldn't feel comfortable being way in the minority in my town. |
Why are you uncomfortable being the idea of being a minority? How do you think minorities in your community feel? |
+1 Love it here. |
Born and raised Marylander. Wasn't thrilled with it for a long time. Moved to Northern Virginia when I got married. Quickly moved back and much more appreciative of Maryland, especially Montgomery County. Traffic isn't great, but it's better than NoVa. Parks are better. Urban planning is better. Public transportation is better. Wine stores are worse. Libraries about the same. Rec Department about the same. Snow clearing is better.
Can't speak to corruption in politics, because I don't know Virginia well enough. Maryland has a lot. But I do prefer Maryland's liberal policies for sure. |
"If I were AA." If you don't want to sound hillbilly, you need to get these things right. (Also making you sound hillbilly: looking down on minorities in particular, but also your disdain for farms compared to your admiration of Howard sub-development hell.) |
Oh, and I'd take Maryland hospitals over almost any other state's any day. Maybe Ohio. |
Md is the best!

I love Maryland, and don't want to leave! I do miss my family in Upstate New York, but the only place I've lived that I really pine for is Portland, OR. |
There is not enough money in the world to make me live in Virginia. Too much tea party mentality. |
Maryland doesn't attack big businesses. They do just fine here. It's small business that feels the burden of overregulation. |
Maryland is consistently ranked No. 1 in the nation in public schools by the education group that does the national rankings. I'm too lazy to google a link. |
I'm can't wait to hear what heavenly place was lucky enough to get you as a resident. If you say Northern Virginia, i will be quite amused. |
The taxes are so low here! In Long Island NY, my friend pays 19,000 year for a tiny house on a 60 x 100 lot. Westchester is similarly high-NJ just as bad too. |
