Atheist hypocrisy

I think OP just can't hack debates with atheists and so, when she can't argue her point, she plays the victim and acts like the mean horrible atheist was mean to her.

I don't see atheists standing outside clinics and calling women trying to get healthcare sinners and whores. I don't see atheists telling people they are going to hell because of who they love.

And yet I've witnessed tons of incidents wherein Christians tell other people they are going to hell. Which is worse, telling someone they are going to hell or telling someone they are stupid? Which is worse, telling someone they are brain dead or trying to physically harass them while they exercise their legally protected rights to seek out the reproductive care of their choice?

I'm tired of religious people playing the victim, like they're the ones being persecuted. Meanwhile, they push to be able to deny people service, deny people healthcare, deny people spousal protections, all based on beliefs that have no basis in actual reality and are impossible to prove/disprove.

Believe whatever you want, but I think atheist are tired of people trying to convert them and tired of people trying to base laws and legal protections and even healthcare on belief instead of fact and science.

Most Christians will fall back on this argument that atheists are mean because they aren't open to believing in god. But most Christians I've seen enter into debates are not at all open to the possibility that god doesn't exist. I prefer honesty over being polite.

Dare I say it? This is a huge, stinking load of BS. To be clear: I'm not saying atheism is BS. Only that your post, complete with your sweeping generalizations, bad logic, and random insults, is BS.

Let me be clear. You make sweeping statements about religious people opposing healthcare, when in fact many liberal religious folks are extreme lefties (like me) and many libertarians who oppose a broader government role in healthcare (and social security and education) are atheists. You make up complete nonsense I've never heard anywhere before you wrote it just now ("Christians think atheists are mean because they aren't open to God") when instead it's just bad behavior (the aforesaid "wimp", "victim," "brain deal" and "drunk") insults that make religious people think you're mean. You delude yourself into thinking it's somehow acceptable to call religious people "brain dead" and "drunk" with impunity, and not have anybody call you "mean" for acting so badly.

In what universe do you live, where this kind of debating schlock is considered deserving of serious thought? You're in denial. Or hypocritical. Or something.

ALL of the protesters outside of abortion clinics are religious and base their stance on religious belief. ALL of the politicians and activists who want to limit access to birth control and abortion in any healthcare scheme are religious people who base their stance on religion.

You're complaining because some atheists have called Christians brain dead. But you act as if Christians don't regularly and "with impunity" insult atheists and others on a constant, regular basis.

Perhaps atheists say mean things, but my point is that Christians DO mean things on a regular basis that have real world consequences. I'll take the mean words over the mean actions any day of the week. And check your statistics, most libertarians in political positions are actually Christians (how they reconcile that with worshiping Ayn Rand is beyond me, but so it is).

Assholes exist everywhere. There are *some* extremists who say that the Bible says wives are to submit to their husbands, and extend that to mean wives can/should be beaten into submission if necessary.

Huh.. I guess OP doesn't want to carry on with her topic anymore.

OP here. Yes, I feel like I'm debating a single atheist in Peoria who wants to troll instead of having a real discussion. Plus, I have a lot of work today.

So definitely not a good use of my time. It happens on DCUM, you know, so while a reasonable person wouldn't hold this decision against me, I'm sure you will because that's how you roll. Ta ta!

OP here one last time. Look, I've said this MANY times already, including in my very first post. I agree with you here: there are hypocritical religious people, and there are definitely religious people doing things I don't support (I'm pro-choice and I most certainly oppose the folks in front of the abortion clinics). (And you seem to have a particular axe to grind with Christians, but who cares and I'll let that one go.) BUT, as I pointed out in my original post, there are already a BAZILLION threads about religious hypocrisy on DCUM. If you want to discuss religious hypocrisy, go resurrect (pun!) one of those bazillion other threads.

I started this thread to discuss HYPOCRITICAL ATHEISTS. A single thread on that subject, a voice crying in the wilderness, as it were. I used the "religious people are brain dead" example because that happened recently. However, you and your ilk have obliged me on this thread with more insults of religious people, including calling me "drunk" and "a victim" and whatever else.

So basically, you're saying you want to HIJACK this thread, LIKE ATHEISTS HAVE HIJACKED ALMOST EVERY OTHER THREAD ON DCUM, for yet another bloody.boring.uncreative.repetitive rant about religious hypocrisy. Every.single.thread. gets hijack by you and your ilk for yet.another.bloody.boring.repetitive rant about religious hypocrisy. With special nasty treatment for Christians, although the Muslims get it in the neck once in a while. And really special nasty treatment for Catholics.

If an example helps, you're no better than posters who answer the wrong question or who hijack threads. If somebody started a thread to ask about good schools in VA, would you post a list of good schools in MD? No, that would be useless and unhelpful. If somebody started a thread asking whether to buy their kids goldfish versus guinea pigs, would you respond with a post about XBoxes? No, that too would be useless and unhelpful. HOW HARD IS THIS TO UNDERSTAND?

Bear with me, because THIS IS KEY TO UNDERSTANDING WHY IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE A DISCUSSION ABOUT RELIGION ON DCUM. Lots of people besides me have asked this philosophical-for-DCUM question: Why are atheists constitutionally incapable of sticking to a thread subject, and instead they feel entitled to hijack every.single.bloody.thread to talk about religious, especially Christian, hypocrisy? PLEASE ANSWER THAT, IF YOU CAN. (Sorry for the bold, but it's so goshdarn hard to get you to address any given subject besides your pet rants, so I'm hoping the bolding will help you focus.)

OP if you look back there were some attempts at a real discussion. The issue with addressing only DCUM, is that there is no way to know that those who are being rude are the very same people who claim to be good without God.

Why are atheists constitutionally incapable of sticking to a thread subject, and instead they feel entitled to hijack every.single.bloody.thread to talk about religious, especially Christian, hypocrisy? PLEASE ANSWER THAT, IF YOU CAN.

This isn't an atheist thing, it's a DCUM thing. Now, why are some atheists incapable? I have no idea, but from my own perspective it has more to do with the individual than their belief set. Maybe because some feel the only way to make sure everyone knows they don't believe in God is to insult Christians.

That is the best I can do to answer your question.

OP here. Yes, I do appreciate there were some attempts at real discussion. The point about whether there's any overlap between the insulters and the "good without god" people is a good one. I argued a few pages ago that there might be some overlap because both things were happening on the same thread (the teenager thread). But I can appreciate it might have been one nutcase troll being rude and some serious people talking about being good without god.

For a five-page thread, I guess some discussion here and there really isn't bad by DCUM standards. Well, I have to go back to work. Have a good day.

WOW. OK, now *I* need a drink.

I think the thread veered off topic because it never made sense in the first place. I don't think atheists come together as a group and say "hey! we are good people who never snark on DCUM." Nothing hypocritical.

But then when you think of how much hypocrisy is found in various religions then it's easy to jump over to that topic.

OP here, and I'm sorry, but it's so frustrating trying to get you guys to stop beating the same old drum and to think about new questions. I've tried short and pithy and that failed miserably. So above I tried a longer explanation, with examples involving schools and pets. Clearly that failed, too.

OK then. You only want to talk about how Religion Sux. You guys want to derail this thread to talk about how Religion Sux. Just like you've derailed most previous threads to talk about how Religion Sux. I can't figure out if this thread is a particular anathema because it involves a small criticism of atheists' behavior (not even a criticism of atheism per se), and so it must be stamped out. Or whether it's just that you guys are incapable of saying anything besides ... Religion Sux.

No matter. My only remaining question: don't you get bored with yourselves? It's not like you guys offer anything new. I mean, the conversation never goes past abortion clinics (and I agree with you, I'm pro choice!) and insisting that we're all Bible literalists (we're not!). We never even dip a toe into the world of interesting topics, like Spinosa or Harris or God the Watchmaker or something new and interesting.

I'm totally bored with the topic of Religion Sux. So I'm off to do something more interesting. Carry on....

Is this about speaking in tongues?
Cause I heard only true believers speak in tongues.

So maybe start with a post about a real topic then?

And try to be concise. You may have a good point in there, but it's difficult to trudge through all of the mumbling.

So you're saying:
(1) non-atheists should start threads about atheism, and
(2) you will still hijack the religious threads to slam religion and insult the religious.
No thanks!

Oh yeah, you're also saying
(3) discussions more than 10 sentences long are too hard for you to understand.

Sorry about that!

Hey OP - I don't want to get you riled up again. But I honestly don't know what you are railing against here.

I get that you're annoyed with people who slam religion or people who are religious. But what is it exactly that you want to say about atheists? What is it that we are doing wrong that's got you so pissed off?
