In my opinion one can look professional without wearing makeup, depending on clothing and carriage. Tasteful makeup enhances the look, sure. Too much makeup destroys it, though. |
| I do. I'm a legal secretary. I wear a Clinique lipstick that's a brownish-pink. |

I don't think that wearing lipstick makes your lips less noticeable, as some would believe. I am an African American female, and I have notices that in the past few years it has been fashionable for AA women to wear nude lipstick, or not wear lipstick or lipgloss at all, and I don't think this look is generally flattering on us. Most AA women have non-small lips, so when we do no wear something on them I think we look particularly unpolished. Up until about 4 or 5 years ago many AA women would wear red/berry shades, and I think that was a great look.

+1, coming from someone who HATES - and I mean completely detests - makeup. It feels horrible, and I resent having to spend time putting it on every morning and retouching it after lunch, but unfortunately life sometimes involves doing necessary things you would rather not do. From the time I was in my middle teen years I knew that makeup was necessary for most occasions. It is part of the appropriate wardrobe for all but the most casual situations. I wish it weren't the case, but a women's work look, or formal look in non-work situations, is incomplete without makeup. Natural-looking, conservative, and not flashy is the way to go for work IMO, but that could depend slightly on the culture of your office and the prevailing norms. |
Mauve lipstick is disgusting. |

It can't be necessary for most occasions, because I haven't worn make-up in any occasion at all since college. However, it might be necessary for you to feel that you are appropriately dressed for most occasions. Which is fine with me, not that it's any of my business anyway. |
| Yes-- I have a mauve-y pink lipstick, or I wear a clear gloss, or a Buxom lip pencil. I am pale and wear glasses so I think it helps me look less dead. |
Are you loving Lupita Nyongo's lipsticks? That woman can wear the hell out of makeup. |
|
I have found that as I get older, I need more makeup, and with lipstick a non-neutral. I'm olive-complexioned, and whereas in my younger days I looked sultry, now I just look green. I wear minimal foundation, but I better have some blush and some lipstick on or else I look dead.
So for me, the lipstick is red. If you're blonde or mousy, yeah, bright red lips aren't really for you as you get older because you will have your lips enter the room before you do. |
Her lipstick sometimes look nice, but sometimes she wears lipstick that is too bright or too pale for her complexion. I think she should grow her hair out though. |
Good bold color for Lupita: http://alusainc.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/lupita-nyongo.jpg Not so good bold color for Lupita: http://www3.pictures.stylebistro.com/gi/Lupita+Nyong+o+Earring+Studs+Diamond+Studs+Ar39rsZ-_Vml.jpg Just my little opinion, not worth two cents. |
its generally harder for AA women to grow their hair out |
I think her hair is gorgeous! With the exception of one recent hairstyle that a commenter likened to "exobrain" (and it did look like two hemispheres of brain rendered in hair. Impressive and icky at the same time...) it's just gorgeous. |
It grows, it just takes more time to manage than the hair of people of non-African descent. You can wear an afro (large or small), braid it, twist it and take the twist out to achieve a particular look, wear dreadlocks, straighten it, etc. One can also wear a weave or a wig. Any style is a lot of work however for most AA women, we don't have wash and wear hair, that is why some cut it short like LN. She is an up and coming movie star, so she can afford to have someone maintain her hair at this point. |
I love EOS but unfortunately so does my dog and she's eaten the three I've purchased. |
