In your opinion, what's the best restaurant in DC?

I guess you were in the minority, as it shut down quite some time ago.

Best does not mean fanciest.

Yeah, I guess the question is how far you really want to push this. The only two restaurants I actually missed in DC when I moved away for 6 years were Ben's Chili Bowl and Potbellys. But is probably going a bit far to call them the "best."

Way far! Ben's is fun, but not good food; and potbelly's is more similar to McDonald's than any of the other restaurants that have been mentioned in this thread.

Haha, I thought the same thing. Then again, I have been disappointed one too many times by $30-40 fancy entrees, even at some of these "best restaurants," so I tend to stick to less flashy places and ethnic foods I can't make as easily at home now. Also, I live in Arlington and find I stay there most often, even for nicer dinners. Judge away but being a hip city hopper is too much of a hassle for me now.

Its not really crazy to name brand new restaurants. The way DC's restaurant scene works, there are one or two brand new restaurants a year that are in fact serving the best food in the city. Then they fade into irrelevance and a new group crops up. Mintwood Place probably really was the best restaurant in DC earlier this year. The fact that it will probably be on nobody's top 10 list in three years is another story.

There are cities that have restaurants that are consistently good over a period of years or even decades. D.C. is not one of them.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Obelisk. We went last March and it was so wonderful. They did a wonderful job accommodating me as a vegetarian.

I think Rasika is WAY overrated. I don't know why people love it. I think it is some of the worst Indian food I've ever had. And I love the fancy Indian restaurants in NYC, it's not that I don't like the genre. I just don't think it is done well at all. Horrible.

Haha I clicked on this thread just to add Obelisk! Love that place.

Agree with Komi. Did NOT like CityZen or Citronelle that much, especially for the price tag.

I wouldn't put Rasika at the top of my list because I think its "just" good Indian food. It doesn't do anything new or surprising in a way I would like a good restaurant too. But if you think its some of the worst Indian food you've ever had, I think you have terrible taste.

I'm an Old Towner, and have been going to Eve since it opened. Was there for my anniversary a few months ago, and will have to say, we totally found it to be meh. Has been getting progressively meh over the past few years, and progressively snobbier. I'm taking a break from it for a while. Too much money for snobby meh.

Enjoyed an awesome dinner at Majestic, however, a few weeks ago.

IMHO.

Majestic is a perfect example - I love going there, both on regular nights and for the Sunday dinners. It's one of my favorite places. But I'd never nominate it as a "best" restaurant (not saying you did, PP, just illustrating a point made above).

+1- totally agree with you! I think Komi is the best.

Coco Sala, El Jaleo and Rasika (in alphabetical order because I love them all but at different times)

DH took me to Proof for my birthday a few months ago. It was a fine enough experience but not worth the price at all. For those of you who mentioned it, what do you like about it?
