You should look at the test scores on Virginia DOE Washington and Lee: Terrible math score at 67 and everything else in the low to mid 80s https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/reportcard/report.do?division=All&schoolName=579 Annandale: Scores in the low to mid 90s (except for math at 82) https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/reportcard/report.do?division=All&schoolName=1432 Yorktown: Scores from 90 to 97 https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/reportcard/report.do?division=All&schoolName=1742 These scores also reflect greatschools for the most part except for some other adjustments with demographics greatschools makes. |
Nice, you bash Wakefield. Anyways the only good repuation WL has is with parent's who are zoned in WL. No one else cares or classifies it as great outside of Arlington. |
Idiots!. You have the wrong high school! You have the figures for Washington and Lee High School located on the Northern Neck 90 miles from Arlington! |
Please be mindful of your links new time: Washington-Lee High School in Arlington Virginia (English: 94, Math 87, History 88, Science 90, Graduation index 92--better overall than Annandale, and close behind Yorktown) https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/reportcard/report.do?division=7&schoolName=1729 |
| So why is Annandale a 7 on GreatSchools and W-L in Arlington a mediocre 5, only slightly better than Wakefield? |
Wakefield is a fine school, and if the school board zoned more higher income neighborhoods to the school its test scores would go up, and the extracurricular offerings would improve. Demographics do define a school's reputation. Because of the large cohort of affluent and motivated students at W-L and of course Yorktown, families chose those schools over Wakefield. They are moving into Arlington in large part because of the solid reputation of the schools, especially in N Arlington. If W-L had a mediocre reputation outside of Arlington as you imply, the schools in that high school pyramid would not be filling up with new families who could easily afford private school. |
I know. Why leave beautiful Capitol Hill for the "better" public schools like W-L in Arlington when DCPS's Eastern High School is a 6 on Greatschools... I remember when some poster from Centreville said that Yorktown was not a good school when the "bad" Fairfax County high schools had a higher Greatschools score. Like you said, the real numbers are in the testing data. W-L and Yorktown's scores are fairly close and Wakefield's scores are not far behind, despite the fact that nearly half of Wakefield's students qualify for free and reduced lunches. |
Except for math Annandale beats WL with all 90s The reason GS rating is higher is because there are a higher amount of minorities (hispanics and black) with much better test scores so it means Annandale is doing something better than WL. http://www.greatschools.org/virginia/annandale/451-Annandale-High-School/?tab=demographics http://www.greatschools.org/virginia/arlington/133-Washington-Lee-High-School/?tab=demographics |
*Higher amount of minorities in Annandale and more farms but it beats WL on test scores except for math. |
Enrollment at W-L is down over 30 students from last year. There doesn't seem to be any stampede to get into the school. |
| stick with yorktown you never know how much worse wl can get |
LMAO. |

Schooldigger ranks all the VA schools by English and Algebra pass rates. Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, in order:
TJ (#1 in the state), Langley, Madison, Marshall, West Springfield (that surprised me), George Mason, Robinson, Woodson, McLean, YORKTOWN, Chantilly, Oakton, Lake Braddock, WASHINGTON-LEE, Westfield, Herndon, Centreville, WAKEFIELD, Bryant (Alternative), Fairfax High, Annandale, West Potomac, Falls Church High, Edison, Hayfield, Lee, TC Williams, Mountain View (Alternative), Stuart, Mount Vernon. |
Ha!. You you remind me of a certain "helpful" poster on this forum. Every now and then when one someone starts a thread inquiring about houses in the W-L district, some jerk warns the OP that the school is horrible and if you care about the value of your house the only desirable Arlington neighborhoods are north of Lee Highway, but not the ones zoned to W-L. Truth is families are interested in the W-L district for the neighborhoods and schools which have a great reputation. |
The official APS projections have W-L at over 3,000 students within a decade based on currently enrolled elementary school students, and every year, roughly 200 students transfer into W-L from Yorktown. Please know your facts before you bash a good school. All the enrollment data is public on the APS website. |
