Someone pulled the dad aside and explained the English meaning and they wound up changing the name since they planned to remain in the states.

This one make me laugh!!

I met a guy named Wyatt Earp. When I asked him about his name, he said "Well, if your parents are named Earp, how can they not name you Wyatt?"

I guess Bill Earp just sounds even funnier.

I've met two Napoleons and a Rommel (first names).

forget about these idiots... I love the beautiful, old fashioned names (Mable, Olive, Genevive, Veronica), and if yours is a Macey, that's beautiful too.

And really, why should anyone care what I or anyone else thinks about different names. No one cares that much, right? we should stop being so judgmental, and the rest of us should stop paying attention to the judgmental bores. (and yes my post is full of contradictions)

I understand silly names with American words but did you know that some of the "weird" names pointed here are considered beautiful or even common in other countries/cultures?
You should open your mind a little bit and understand that the world does NOT revolve around "America".

So if I moved to France and decided I'd name my kid Merde b/c I thought it was great-sounding, or I moved to Mexico and thought Puta would be a lovely name would anyone who told me (mercifully!) otherwise be an anti-American prick?

maybe you'll name them because you want them to eat "merde" and you want them to be a "puta"

Well, it was only a matter of time-some folks were having a little innocent fun and some Rainbow Coalition fruitcake gets her panties in a bunch-by the way, the District of Columbia is located in AMERICA! Thus the name DCUM and thus the fact that the majority of the posters here are posting from America-no one meant to insult clueless foreigners.

DC is in America the same way Mexico is in America, Panama, Argentina...
Ignorant, America is the Continent.
Your country is UNITED STATES of America, right?
you all meant to have fun using the inocense and good intentions of other people.
I wonder how you'll react when someone make fun of your clueless DC because "their" wonderful name.

I don't think this is a matter of ignorance at all... it's a matter of taste. If I don't like how a name sounds, regardless of its country of origin, I don't like it. That doesn't make me ignorant. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the name Barack (just don't like the way it sounds) but I'm sure it is considered a "beautiful, common" name in Nigeria. And I'm sure in Nigeria names like Ava, Emily, Sophie, Michael, and Jack could be considered ugly. They wouldn't be ignorant or nation-centric for thinking that.

yes, it's a matter of ignorance (lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact)
you are ignorant about the background of the person, the motivation of the parents when chosing the name of their child.

what should I say when I see someone named APRIL?
laugh?
what if the parent wanted to honor a grandparent naming the child after the dob of the grandparent?

you all should go spend time with your children instead of making fun of someone elses name.

A man I dated has a mother who was a twin. I nearly died when I learned that she and her twin were named Gerald and Geraldine, both went by Gerry(i).

Why do I need to know the motivations of the parent to determine if I like a name? That's ridiculous. So what if the person's name is Karis and that means "grace" in Greek? I don't like the way it sounds. Period. Or so what if someone was born in Summer and their parents wanted to honor the season of their birth. I don't like it. In my estimation, when someone is asking the best or worst of anything (as the OP was) it is matter of taste/opinion, not knowledge. That being said, there are many foreign names that I love and many, like Barack, that I don't.
