But really is that fair? Do I need to cite the MANY MANY cases involving football, baseball and basketball scandals? Why do you "pick" on lacrosse? I will answer it for you...because precisely of what you said its made up "mostly of white rich privileged kids" and I think THAT is what gets you hot under your collar. Forget that the vast majority of them are very athletic do extremely well in school (do your research as to which sport outperforms the rest in the classroom....you guessed it lacrosse)! So if you are going to scoop down reciting the case of a local lacrosse coach and his immature and mean spirited antics (EVERY community has dozens of those for ALL sports.......don't even get me started) or the one or two cases that became big media deals because again of who they targeted then this is a futile battle. But if you want to go toe to toe and tell me a sport that has less incidences than lacrosse....I will be more than happy to be your sparring partner and prove you wrong. VERY wrong.
Guilty. But I'm sure I'm not alone in this. Who's not more impressed by grit than what Daddy's money can buy? Maybe if the sport hadn't been invented by Native Americans.... I'll just be happier when it's a little more diverse both ethnically and economically. And as you noted, this is happening. I really don't need to go toe to toe with you as my kids don't play this sport. OP asked how LAX players were perceived and I answered. OP didn't ask about loutish behavior in other sports. Either way, the negative impressions about LAX-ers aren't my problem, but something the sport needs to address.
The perception is out there: Here is an example http://www.insidelacrosse.com/news/2010/11/24/coachs-bookshelf-bigger-game-bromophobia-how-bo-knows-lax-bros-and-athletes-age BroMoPhobia Somehow, according to the website MyLifeIsBro.com, misogyny and domestic abuse have become as central to the “Lax Bro” image as “the flow” and “the spoon.” While the website is (hopefully!) satirical, it’s an incubator for every negative stereotype that poisoned our sport during the baseless and devastating Duke scandal. How laxbros became gangsta seems a mystery, but in every demand on the “My Life Is Bro” board for a sandwich from a ‘slampiece,’ one envisions a nodding Richard Brodhead saying “I told you so!” One can just as readily envision a 12 year old laxrat, one not yet able to make the distinction between satire and reality, ultimately internalizing the text on the site as authentic guidelines for ‘bro’ status, just like every one of the thousands of kids who emulated “The Boz.” The anonymous postings on mylifeisbro.com are presumably fictitious, but in the Age of Image, perception is reality. For young people in the process of developing an identity while concurrently maintaining online alter egos, alter egos where anonymity and disinhibition can quell sound judgement, the screen image can supplant and redefine reality.
