The zip in bold are the ones where you could pay 1-1.2 million to get a large newer/new house

22101, 22101, 22043, 22046, 22182, 22027, 22181, 22180

You say that like she's fleeing Arlington schools. I wouldn't want to live in Lyon Village either, but North Arlington's schools are directly comparable to McLean. They're practically clones.

hahahahaahah nice try, the best is yorktown and it's barely on par with Marshall and Madison

Yeah, those North Arlington schools are so ghetto. The Yorktown kids are driving 3-year-old BMWs and carrying last-generation iPhones. Marshall/Madison High all the way!

Yorktown's test scores and rating fell this year, marshall is now better. Also note that marshall has more FARMS and less white people so you can't use that argument anymore

I'm sorry, are you suggesting that "more FARMS and less white people" makes Marshall more desirable than Yorktown? In any event, sure there, Marshall booster. It's fabulous, totally agree! Far superior to the wealthy N. Arlington schools.

No the point is that despite the rich white kids in yorktown their scores and ratings has fallen bellow marshall. So that argument is bunk they are just not as smart or the school is failing.

Yes, and I'm sure that will be a critical deciding point for the type of people looking to buy into the Yorktown/McLean/Langley neighborhoods. You're hilarious.

Unless they are doing private it does. I am not saying McLean and Langley are the same as Marshall but Yorktown is definitely sub-par according to test scores. Something is not working out for Yorktown and the falling scores reflect that.

I am very sad to be leaving Lyon Village and I am still hoping something will come along that will suit us there. It's a lovely neighborhood but our twins will soon be 5 and we have to make the move soon so that they are all set for school.
I do not love and my husband hates the very new boxy houses. We would love a house with character both inside and out. The trouble is, we are really unfamiliar with McLean. Which parts are easily accessible to DC, where my husband works and where our oldest is at school? Also which part of Mclean will be near the new metro line?

Thanks again.

You're like 10 minutes away, can't you just take a drive and check things out?

Be nice. It sounds like she is just looking for ideas and suggestions on places where she might look. Once you start heading out west, if you're not careful you'll end up in Kansas before you know it!

I am just jealous and perplexed. If I had enough money for a $1.5 million home, I would take half of it and send my 2 kids to the private school of their dreams for 12 years, and still have enough for a lovely home at $750K.

I am confuse too. This seem very last minute? Anyway, how about Cherrydale? Very lovely homes there.

OP here they will be 5 in March so we have a whole year to plan. Just thinking ahead.

Anonymous wrote:The McLean/Falls Church thing really depends on the type of house interests the OP. It's hard to find new SFH construction in McLean under $1.5 million right now, whereas you can find new construction in Falls Church/22043 (McLean or Marshall HS districts) in the $1.3-1.4M range, typically a new Craftsman-style house (which I think look better on larger lots in Falls Church and McLean than on a smaller lot in Arlington, which tends to drive the design). On the other hand, if she's more interested in older homes, she can find them in that price range in McLean or Falls Church/22043.

OP here. I am not necessarily looking for very new constructions. Prefer older style homes with character. I am also not married to being near a metro. It would just be nice to have.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

OP here. We already have one in private. We are thinking about starting the younger ones in a good public and moving them to private later. Being in a good school district also helps with the resale value of the house.

For 22102, I see 28 properties on sale between $900K and $1.5mm.
I really like this house, as it is in my area:

OP here. I have been looking at that too. It's very pretty. I was wondering why so many of the houses have been on the market for so long in 22102. Since I am looking for space - there are 6 of us now compared to 3 when we moved to our current house - I was looking in 22102 as I think you can get more space for your $ there.

Anonymous wrote:If proximity to Metro is important, I'd honestly look in Falls Church City over McLean. George Mason HS is ranked well. There's a bike trail that will take you straight to East Falls Church station which will hub both the Orange and Silver lines.

A glance online shows some nice homes in your price range, and there's a lovely park and awesome farmer's market. You'll also have closer access to restaurants and shopping than in McLean.

Op here. Metro access is more a like to have than an absolute necessity.

Hi OP - that was my post. As a McLean resident, some prices are still listed at levels to get people out from under water properties. True for everywhere to some extent I guess. Toss out a bid. A sfor the need for more spoace, go to western parts of McLean; but that kills your desire to be closer to DC

Okay then, based on your stated interest, I would again suggest Cherrydale. Have you ever taken a drive through that neighborhood? there are some obsoletely beautiful houses there. You'll still be within the LV geographical area but with a better looking neighborhood. Like it better than CC, CCH.

Maybe you could start a separate thread about Cherrydale? There is no shortage of threads about North Arlington. This happens not to be one of them.

I concur with the recs for 22101 on the GW Parkway/123 side - close to DC and feeds into McLean High School. Langley High School is far out there, so if driving to DC is a factor, I'd avoid it. Or hit Country Club Hills on the other side of the McLean/Arlington line, which puts you in 22207 feeding into Yorktown, which is the equivalent to McLean High School on the Arlington side, and also a quick shot into DC. $1.5 mill on either side of these lines buys you a decent property and a good commute into DC. Does not buy you metro access or walkability, though. You're committing to the car.
