Golly, how much dancing does it take to realize that if you name yourself after a famous tax protest that a taxing authority is going to look extra hard at your application?

Sorry but this is just getting ridiculous. Sure, they shouldn't have "profiled" any more than I think cops should pull over people based on how they look or what country they are from (a point that you probably don't agree with). But come on, the proposition of the Tea Party is really questionable when it comes to 501 (c) (4) status. Not saying that some of them should not pass, but they are putting people they call "their candidates" up for office.

^^^^ it's so rediculously bad that IRS officials are afraid of saying what they did under oath. Being anti excessive tax is no different than being religious or pro choice. This is going to be the theme if the mid term elections. Government mismanaged, corrupt, incompetent and greedy.

I know it is hard to believe that there are rules on tax exempt status. But it's true. You can't run your own candidates for office and be a 591 c 4.

I know it is hard to believe, but we can actually expect the government of this country to treat people of different political affiliations the same. How do you not get this. The issue is disparate treatment. The IRS has already acknowledged it. The issue that is in the news is not that the IRS is screening groups to ensure 501 compliance. They selected the conservative groups.

Come on, your not being serious. You know this. Why are you debating some straw man?

Uh, what is the liberal version of the tea party? Do you know of a 501 c 4 that puts up candidates in the Democratic primaries?

They may not put up candidates, but they certainly support the Democrats:

Sierra Club
Moveon.org

Nice try, those are issue groups that are no different from the NRA or the Christian Coalition, and their tax status is not in dispute.

They support candidates--what is the difference. The Tea Party supports conservative causes. Moveon supports very left liberal causes and candidates.

Moveon is an issue group--and very much involved in political issues.

What planet are you on? That has to be the most laughable characterization of the tea party I have ever heard

The list of politicians who have proudly claimed to be Tea Party candidates is far too long to airbrush out of history.

There is no one Tea Party. It is a lot of grassroots organizations.

The one thing that all Tea Party organizations have in common is a belief in smaller government and fewer taxes. That is their purpose and their issue.
