Yes to this from another Philadelphian with a relative who teaches at Penn. I thought the U Penn evolved when folks got concerned they were being mixed up with Penn State.

Well yes. When we were on campus as students, it was obvious what "Penn" referred to. Same when I talk to other alumns. But when I'm talking to those other people, saying "UPenn" helps make it clear.

I'm from Boston. Penn is called Penn there not UPenn.

Of course. Because you're not surrounded by people who immediately think of Penn State.

Get back on topic please.

Well, maybe stay off topic. This is all obnoxious and lots of BS.

Yeah right. You have it all figured out.

Princeton -- smart kid but had a lot of smart kids in the class. No one in entire family had ever gone to an Ivy. Kid wasn't even going to apply because college counselor was skeptical and not encouraging. Moral of story -- kids should apply and see what happens ... nothing ventured...nothing gained.

DD got into Rice last year even though her standardized testing stats were significantly below the school's average. DD put her heart and soul into her essays, and got very creative with Rice's extra supplement. The admissions officer also mentioned that the school was looking to add some geographic diversity, and that they only had one student from DC at the time. I guess some combination of those things worked in her favor. Like PP said, it shows that kids shouldn't be afraid to apply just because they think they can't get in!

Congratulations!!

Is your DD at a DC private or public school?

Does she like Rice? Is it "southern?"

PP- she went to a DC public high school.

Yes, she loves it. According to her, it doesn't feel Southern at all. Houston is a huge city that's fairly liberal for being in Texas (they went for Obama in 2008 and 2012, and have an openly gay mayor) and the Rice student body seems very diverse. She says it's great to be surrounded by fun, interesting people who like learning new things as much as she does. I told her that sounds cheesy, but I guess she likes it.

PPs, did all your kids do Early Decision? I thought many accepts were still to come.

Early Actions and Early Decisions were notified in December. Rolling decisions are underway. The regular decisions are released about 1 April. Students then have until 1May to deposit.

I'm going to guess that some of these kids were accepted in recent years and are in college now.
