11:46 - considerate people spring for an alarm and/or big dogs, as we have.
But generally, I find people here hugely lacking common sense; and more concerned with deflecting than looking in the mirror. It is their own downfall, but of course they refuse to see it. It is not brain surgery to reposition one's lights; or make it so one's lights adjust in a reasonable, *considerate* (EGADS) manner. Why are people so against buying blinds? Another D.C. p*ssing contest? How empty is your life that this kind of point would be so important to make? Wow. |
| Real men don't need lights on outside all night. You sound weak... |
| We don't keep our lights on and are glad our neighbors don't either. |
Idiot. |
Are you a burglar by any chance? I've NEVER heard that good outdoor lighting at night is NOT a good idea!! Every place I've ever lived, the cops have said, "Light up the night!" Burglars stay away from well-lit places. Many years ago, I lived in a house where my bedroom was about 20 feet from my neighbor's front door. She was a single woman, so she kept a very bright light on all night, and yes it shone into our bedroom and was very annoying (but not as annoying as the fights she had with her daughters in the middle of the night, but that's another story). In every house we've ever owned, we've always kept front and back door lights on all night. It's sensible, and does keep the house safer. Once we had a bright light that a neighbor complained about, and we immediately replaced it with a dimmer light and turned it downward so it didn't shine into their house. OP, I don't think your neighbors have the right to complain when they have no blinds or very sheer ones in their bedroom. When our neighbor's light was shining in our bedroom, the light was so bright it came in around the edges of our blackout shades and heavy curtains. We didn't complain however, because we understood our neighbor's need to feel safe at night. If your light is so bright that it keeps them awake AFTER they've bought blackout curtains or shades, then they have a right to complain, and in that case, you ought to do the best you can to dim or redirect the lights, or use motion detectors if necessary. You need to feel safe in your home, and your neighbors need to feel comfortable in theirs. It's important that each of you do your best to accommodate each others' needs. |
| I have blinds, black out curtains unless I wrap the whole darn window with tape on the sides, the light still comes in. I like to have some sun in the winter time come through the window for heat, those curtains are a pain to pull back. But yet my neighbor who I am not sure likes those really really bright LED lights. Invades my property. What are they scared of, if someone want to break in, I wouldn't be able to identify them because the lights blind me? Everyone in this neighborhood is blind and deaf, they never see or hear anything when you ask them anyway. I don't need the lights, I have insurance, an alarm system, dog, two fully loaded guns. Plus I put my car up at night in the garage where it is safe instead of leaving it out to the mercy of thief's and they have a garage to put it in. College educated people go figure, and they laugh at the poor folks. |
Leave them on all night, as does EVERYONE on our street. Are your flood lights? I find it hard to believe their sleep is being disrupted by your porch lights
They would have to be sleeping 10 feet away from ours to be effected. |
| We keep our exterior lights on all night, as do most people in our neighborhood. The neighbors behind us also leave on their back light all night. |
| I live in the country and the neighbor's lights, which they decided to keep on (no one lives there, they just pop in to check the place out from time to time) shine in my bedroom and my eyes as I have my bed up to my window so I can see the stars and moon. They certainly have a right to light their own property, but not mine, nor to remove the enjoyment of my country sky. I've asked them for, several years, to replace the lights with motion sensor lights, but though they're wealthy, they won't do. So I advised them that if I see their home being ransacked, I will just watch. I have decided to put duct tape on my side of the light fixture, even though they have camera surveillance. I don't care anymore - the light keeps me awake and I can't imagine living the rest of my life with those awful lights ruining the starlight. |

I cannot believe nobody has posted this yet.
OP, channel your inner David! http://www.27bslash6.com/halogen.html |
| We keep our porch lights on all night, as do all of our neighbors. Our HOA encourages everyone to do so. This thread is surprising to me - aren't porch lights intended to be used all night? What a bizarre issue. |
