To the woman breastfeefing her 4 year old at the table at Wild Tomato...

Sounds like a Republican.

Nah, republican women don't do the extended breastfeeding thing. I think that with rare exception that behavior falls into the crunchy granola mom realm, wh without exception tend to be on the liberal side of the house.

Call me crazy but I don't really concern myself with what anyone else besides my own family and our waiter/waitress at a restaurant. I wouldn't even notice if a lady took her boob out and shook at us, it's none of my business unless she walked up to our table and did so. Mind your business.

I love it when Western women trot out the "but they nurse for 7 years in many other countries." Asked to produce the countries, they are inevitably primitive or impoverished (we've heard Bangladesh and Nepal so far in this thread), so any extended nursing has more to do with meeting basic food needs (i.e., prevent the kid from starving) more than any specific magical virtue. Why do these women hold up primitive ways of doing things as a model? It's sort of like the whole "women gave birth at home for thousands of years" argument. Yeah? So? Ever hear of "progress?"

Sounds like breast milk was not on the menu.
Bring your own is the only option. After all, everyone sitting at a table in a restaurant is supposed to eat. You really cannot occupy a table without eating something.
As long as the waiter gets the 20% tip for the cost of service

Child may not have been 4, but I bet it's pretty obvious he was beyond 12, 16 months or so. And breastfeeding beyond that point is definitely weird.

Precisely. Why don't we all just moved to an impoverished third world nation, if things are so great and "natural" there?

I don't see the point of doing it in public?

Just curious, what is the point at all at 2 1/2?

Comfort, health, bonding.

Hate to tell you, momma, but at 2.5, he should be getting his "comfort, health and bonding" from you in a different way. You need to give it up. Why don't you at least admit that it's for you at this point, and not him?

Mostly. Unless they're uber, uber Christian. There are a few of those that go in for it, too.

True. Except then OP would have included in her original post that mom was sitting their breastfeeding her 4 year old while her other 12 children were being looked after by their big sisters

women breastfeeding until the child is older in developing countries is a sad symptom of poverty, not "staying true to our prehistoric roots". these families have no options and these children are starving. western women who glamorize this as anything else are clueless and frankly, insulting.

exactly. pretending like this is anything but emotionally harmful to a child (physically probably doesn't matter one way or another) is just naive. mom needs a therapist.

and to the pp who said it's possible the kid was like, 6 months and looked 4 - come on. what are the chances?

I heard the Resturant charged a cork fee. We should protest!

I have a serious question, not meant to throw flames, I promise. Why is it that the only people I know of or have witnessed nursing beyond two only do this with boys. Is that just my own random experience? Has anyone seen this with girls?

Anonymous wrote:Who cares? Are you the same sort of b*tch who judges women for formula feeding? Why do you care?

Scientists think the natural age for weaning is between 2-7 years, btw. So 4 may not be common in the U.S., but it's within the realm of normal. Don't be so small-minded.

I'm a scientist and the data does not support your assertions. Breast feeding a 2-7 year old is not natural in any society, but that number is an oft quoted Kathy Dettwyler paper. There is no country in the world with an average age of breast feeding higher than 31 months (Bangladesh). Age 4 is not "within the realm of normal".

What's the average of zero and seven?
