We know a family in which the girls have the mother's last name and the boys have the father's last name. Neither parent needed to change his/her name and both got to pass their names on.

Reading comprehension fail. The point we are debating is how OP's husband's decision will be percieved. I submit that many will judge him negatively for it. Rolling your eyes does not change that fact.

Wow. Really surprised by all the folks who are so bothered by this. If I knew about it I might find it unusual at first glance because it's not the norm, but then I wouldn't think twice about it. It certainly isn't an action that would cause me to form an impression of the man or woman's character based off of it.
