My dogs are old and crepid and I have two under two

Call an animal rescue center and talk with someone and see if they have any suggestions. I don't believe any vet would put down a healthy dog or one that is simply old but not on any pain. As they are litter mates they might grieve themselves to death, if separated. Good luck and I hope you find a good solution .

Too late. She already killed them.

OP again -- to all the haters.. it's OK... I know I made the right decision and my family and lifestyle is better for it. You are not me and don't know my situation except what you extrapolate from an anonymous posting online.

The boys were both in ill health and I was not able to pay the hefty (>2K) vet bill to "fix" them.

I have had dogs all my life -- I am 43 and put one other dog down before these two came along so I'm not immune.

But go ahead and judge... I really don't care what you think. I am at peace and yes, my stress has reduced and my house is cleaner and I can focus on my two children and spouse.

And trust me, I have NO interest in getting a pet any time soon. I am burned out at this point.

You need to take responsibility for them and stop being an asshole. Yes I said it...a self centered careless asshole.

Wow. I've never said this to anyone on DCUM before but you are legitimately a bad person.

Glad you can sleep at night! Congrats on your clean house!

OP here... how am I a bad person? Talk to me.

OP, I totally understand your actions. You have to do what is right for your family Your pets lived in a loving home and died without suffering. Your kids are more important and a stressed out parent isn't healthy for the kids. Neither is a biting dog. You are not a bad person. You made a decision that others might not make and some can't understand. Others do understand - me being one.

It sounds too right now that you are home full time. Not sure if you are a sahm. It is much easier to handle pets and little kids when you are away 50+ hours a week versus dealing with both all day, day in and day out and not just a couple hours at the end of the day.

No point in engaging the haters.

I hope all of you people saying OP is a terrible person are vegetarians. UThat is, unless you can explain why it is morally better to kill healthy cows and pigs in manner that often involves boiling or skinning them alive and shocking them with cattle prods as opposed to humanely euthanizing the dogs, which did not sound like they were perfectly healthy.

If I was the OP I probably would have done the same thing.

Its does. You're killing your dogs bc they are inconvenient. I hope you never are allowed to own another pet again.

Not the PP who called you a bad person, but I'll give you 2 big reasons:

- you knew these dogs were ill and in pain months ago, yet have not bothered taking them to the vet in over a year (mentioned in your 1st post) One was physically ill and the other was clearly emotionally stressed.
- you wanted to "transition" (again your words) past these dogs like they were a interference, not living, loving creatures that you have lived with for 10 yrs

These animals depended on you to take care of them and keep them healthy and pain-free, and all you could do was think of them as an inconvenience and are so happy your home is clean now.

Sorry - if someone I knew did this, I'd think they were animal abusing scum, and I'd tell them too.

I'm with you, OP. These folks who torture their animals, artificially extending their lives are the sadists to me.

You did what you felt was right for you and your family. It's fine. I'm sure all the people harping on you have lily white morals and actions...yeah.

The same parent who allows her elderly, ailing pets to suffer until she had a "reason" to kill them.

Ugh. I wish there was a "not allowed to have pets" list. Because the OP thinks she handled the situation well and will surely get more pets at some point, to be disposed of when they, too, become inconvenient.

Sad.
