Naming an airport after the guy who fired the air traffic controllers is the height of irony.
|
| I call them DCA, BWI, and IAD. But then, I moved here 7 years ago while I was in the airline industry. |
|
National, BWI, and Dulles.
I've lived here my entire life and am independent. I simply refuse to call them Reagan and Marshall because National and BWI work just fine. |
I don't call it Reagan, and it is 100% for political reasons. It has nothing to do with disliking Reagan (although I do) and everything to do with the fact that I don't recognize the right of a Congress, in which I have no elected voting representative, to rename my city's airport and force my city to spend significant resources on changing metro signs etc . . . I particularly object because there's no history of the federal government doing this in any are in which the citizens do have voting rights. I can not imagine, for example, Congress suddenly deciding to call the Salt Lake City airport "Obama" or "Clinton" airport. The fact that they chose a living Republican namesake in a city that is overwhelmingly Democratic, and has a history of using naming rights to honor the dead is icing on the cake. In contrast, I have no problems with calling the Reagan Building the Reagan Building, because I recognize the federal government's rights to name their own buildings. As to why I call it BWI and not Marshall? Habit. Democrat/42 year DC resident |
Republican. |

| Born and raised in Alex. and I call it National. |
I think this is a good explanation. I also call the Reagan building by that name, but the airport is National. Before I moved here I accidentally called it Reagan to a friend who I went to college with who I was visiting, and he raised an eyebrow and said, "you mean Washington National?" I never called it Reagan again. I would love to call BWI Thurgood Marshall but it's just habit to call it BWI. I've lived in the area for 11 years, and am a Democrat (a much more moderate variety one than I used to be, though). |

National and BWI, but after reading these boards and the petty responses I am going to start saying Reagan National Liberal Democrat turned Republican |
| I call it Reagan National. I also say BWI Thurgood Marshall since I am a big fan of him as well. I also try to remember to refer to that building downtown as The Thurgood Marshall Justice Center, or whatever it is called. And I guess people around here say King Day....instead of Martin Luther King Day. I don't say "that airport in New York". I say "JFK". |
you really just making my point that folks spill politics into too many aspects of their life. sure the naming of the airport can be considered dumb but it wouldnt stop me from naming it such especially if it just came natural to me. and honestly ive never looked at anyone or thought of their politics whether they decide to call it reagan or national. nor would i think they were being hypocritical if they thought the process of naming the airport reagan was silly and they still happen to call it reagan. i am able to not view everything somebody does on some political bent. |
| Why would you ever mention JFK in NY? LaGuardia is where it's at, man. |
